Don’t fall prey to media influence and frenzy. Remember Ebola? How many cases did we have in the Chicago? None, and we spent countless hours and $$$ on preparations, PPE training, response tactics, etc. During that same time period, a Chicago hospital had a major fire in which 2 floors on inpatients needed to be evacuated. A hospital in the norther suburbs had an Active Shooter situation in which a doctor was killed. Those are identified hazards that were more likely then to happen and still are but hospitals spend very little time preparing for those situations.

Goals are broad statements of what you want to achieve through hazard mitigation, such as reducing losses, enhancing resilience, or improving preparedness. Drill until you fall down and have no more answers. Then you’ll be able to see what you need to work on.

The hole purpose of building community lifelines is to understand the basic sustainable needs of a community, so if you prioritize within those seven lifelines, then you have a way of parsing mitigation goals and objectives and prioritize based on the ranked gap approach of which is most essential to sustain human life, the economy and environmental welfare.

The final step in hazard mitigation is to select and implement the strategies that best suit your goals and objectives, and that are feasible and cost-effective. Strategies are the actions or methods that you use to achieve your objectives, such as regulations, incentives, education, or infrastructure. Strategies should be based on the best available evidence, and should consider the costs and benefits, the technical and operational requirements, the social and environmental impacts, and the stakeholder preferences. Strategies should also be monitored and evaluated to assess their performance and outcomes.
