Just to add here, for the IT sector GITHUB is the normal portfolio platform. And for creative arts like film, journalism, tv, video, INSTA and TIKTOK are great alternatives. And the one believe works really well nowadays and is sector neutral is NOTION!

One thing to do is to see if you can find other examples of portfolios for the sector/organisation you are targeting. It will make it easier to select what to include.

2 Showcase your best work

Your portfolio should highlight your most relevant, impressive, and recent work samples. You don't need to include everything you've ever done, but rather focus on the projects that demonstrate your skills, achievements, and value proposition. You should also consider the quality, diversity, and impact of your work. Choose work samples that showcase your creativity, problem-solving, and innovation, as well as your technical expertise and attention to detail. Avoid repeating similar projects or showing outdated or incomplete work. You should also include metrics, testimonials, or awards that show the results and outcomes of your work.

Remember your best work could be your personal projects or DIY projects as well, if they are relatable and add value to your offering. I always say this to my students, your examples of work or project does not necessarily have to come from official work settings, it could be your side hustles or projects from your garages as well.

Apart from studying the job description for clues to help you decide what to focus on, it's also worth looking at the latest documents published by the company on their website and in particular their press releases which should reveal a direction of travel which, If you are applying for any marketing/comms/design style job, consider their design style online and, if you can, in print as part of putting your portfolio creation too.

3 Tell a story

Your portfolio is not just a collection of work samples, but also a narrative of your professional journey. You want to show your audience who you are, what you do, and why you do it. You can use different elements of your portfolio, such as your bio, your resume, your project descriptions, and your personal branding, to tell a compelling story about yourself. You should also explain the context, process, and learnings of each work sample. How did you approach the project? What challenges did you face? What solutions did you find? What did you learn from the experience? Telling a story will help you showcase your personality, passion, and values, as well as your creativity and professionalism.

The whole story you present, should be a tightly knit narrative which talks about your WHY in life. A story with multiple Why's is not very engaging and consistent. So story telling is definitely an art, where you drive your reader to know the real YOU!

4 Be consistent

Your portfolio should have a consistent look and feel that reflects your personal brand and identity. You should use a coherent color scheme, typography, layout, and tone of voice throughout your portfolio. You should also make sure that your portfolio aligns with your other online presence, such as your website, social media, or blog. Essentially, this is all about developing an authentic personal brand. This should extend to your behaviour as well so make sure your social media doesn't contain content which would make your target recruiter wince!

Branding is key! Remember anything you write, show and depict have implicit and explicit messages attached with it. So make sure the reader perceives what you want them to perceive. A great read I would suggest would be an article called THE BRAND CALLED YOU.

5 Keep it simple

Your portfolio should be easy to navigate, read, and understand. You don't want to overwhelm or confuse your audience with too much information, clutter, or distraction. You should use a clear and logical structure that organizes your work samples by category, theme, or chronology. You should also use white space, headings, subheadings, and bullet points to break up your text and highlight the key points. You should also avoid using jargon, slang, or acronyms that your audience may not be familiar with. Keep your portfolio simple and concise, and let your work speak for itself.

Be careful when choosing your typeface/font. Comic Sans may well convey the wrong feel. It can help to use the same font as the organisation you are targeting as it helps to align you to it visually without saying so. Remember it's all about showing that you are the right person to join their tribe!

Think of your portfolio as a shop window. If it looks dusty and old, passers-by are likely to keep walking past. Remember this is about showing how you have developed and keeping developing so keep looking for ways to show this including short courses to reflect learning and upskilling.

To really stand out, maybe add a short video in your portfolio! People remember 80% of what they see and only 20% of what they read. Use that to your advantage.
