How do you balance cost and performance in mechatronic system design?

For me, it's crucial to understand the customer's process requirements and how you plan to deliver them. For instance, designing a cooling system for a centralised 'ring main' involves managing extensive flow ranges across multiple delivery points, leading to significant fluctuations in flow demand. While precise control can be achieved with costly control valves, VFD pumps, and transmitters - the customer might not need such complexity. A simpler solution with a fixed delivery and constant bypass might be more appropriate for their industry, application, and budget. The key is understanding the project's driving force and delivering an outcome that meets the non-negotiables in the most simplistic way.

Balancing cost vs design is a very tough job. But gaining data from my customers, I start with the most basic component that meets criteria, increase efficiency by developing the current design and upgrading to newest available product/parts without breaking the bank. There is always a play in deciding which parts to upgrade and how it would increase productivity.
