1 Backup planning

Before you start backing up your data, you need to define your backup objectives, scope, and frequency. Your backup objectives should align with your business goals and recovery requirements, such as how much data you can afford to lose (recovery point objective, or RPO) and how fast you need to restore it (recovery time objective, or RTO). Your backup scope should identify what data sources, applications, and systems you need to protect, and where they are located. Your backup frequency should depend on how often your data changes and how much storage space you have available.

A critical component of DR planning is to identify the RPO and RTO for each line of business and for each application they use. Ideally you always backup all data, but which data gets restore first and in what order is what needs to be known and tested (at least annually) within any DR plan. One LOBs requirements rarely match the needs of another and restores can sometimes occur concurrently allowing for multiple recovery streams. Even within backup datasets, such as email, CRM, SharePoint, etc., having access to the most recent few days of content could be and likely is more important than having the entire history. If your backup and restore process allows for filtering restores by time consider adding that to your plan as well.

Wherever you store your backups, in the cloud, on-prem, off site, for your DR plan to succeed you not only need the backed-up content to restore, you also need the necessary hardware or systems/network to perform the restores within your RTO. If the content is stored off-site, you will need to factor in the time to obtain the backup media in your RTO, ex. can it be couriered or do you have to wait overnight? For multi-site companies using physical backup media, consider sending the media to another office.

20 years back on my memory lane .. I heard a story of a sincere backup administrator loosing his job ..He was taking the backup very sincerely …but on the day of disaster nothing came from backup..Oh God! he had never ever tested the backup ..no dry run. Keep backing up …keep testing it????

A good practice might be to have regular tests as exercises during agreed time windows where systems might stay offline or ensure exercises in development environment. Similar to fire exercises - the outcome might reveal that due to some particularities the restoration was not complete. Therefore the result might lead to remediaton procedures or needed development to support the run with no bugs of the restorations, but the advantage will be that all these will be done without the presure of an real issue.
