How do you avoid interrupting or jumping to conclusions when listening to others?

Content is coming at us at a million miles per minute. And often, active listening takes the hit. To connect with others and avoid misunderstandings, you gotta be present and listen. That means putting aside distractions. All of them. It's not just about hearing the words: - Understand the speaker's tone. - Watch body language. - Pay attention to the underlying message. Whether it's eye contact, nodding, or verbal cues like "uh-huh" or "I see," show interest. By being fully present in our conversations, we not only strengthen our connections with others but also build a culture of respect and understanding. So commit. Be present. Listen.

In the world of back to back meetings, I find the best way is intentionally preparing to listen. For me, this is at least five minutes before a meeting to clear my mind from the last discussion or time to stop work so it doesn't carry over into a call.

The one thing that I have found that works best for me is to write down concise bullet points, I do agree that putting away my phone, laptop etc is a valuable listening aid however due to having slight ADHD this aids my ability to listen and participate fully in discussions. I do not take my attention off the speaker, I actively listen and jot down observations. I am thus able to actively listen, as well as process the discussion, This allows me the opportunity to note pertinent observations and provides me the opportunity to clarify them when the person is finished talking. I find that by writing stuff down my memory retention is much improved, not to mention I can refer back to the discussion later.

I agree with these recommendations and also Leigh-Anne comment. I would also recommend to not overdo it. From my perspective, I am comfortable getting interrupted if my interlocutor has any question pertaining to what I just mentioned. Being present and in the room is also about taking part in the discussion.

Open-ended questions - questions go beyond a simple "yes" or "no" response - fix this. Need some examples? - What do you think about this approach? - How did you come to that conclusion? - Can you tell me more about that? - What are some of the obstacles we’ll face? Here’s why they work: - You demonstrate curiosity. - You avoid assumptions. - You create connections. So next time you're in a conversation, ditch the yes-or-no questions…and the awkward silence. Ask more open-ended questions.

Just to complement what has been written here, asking a question like "Do you..." can only lead to a binary answer ie. yes or no. This type of guided question will likely close the discussion.

I think I heard one thing, the other person meant something different... I’m not sure whe I saw it first, but I PAS (paraphrase, ask, and summarize). Here’s how it works - with examples: Paraphrasing: Restate what you heard in your own words. This shows you're listening and helps you understand. - So, if I understand you correctly, you're concerned about the deadline? Ask: Clarify if something seems unclear. - Can you tell me more about what you meant by that? Summarize: Capture the main points of the conversation at key moments. This gives the speaker a chance to correct anything you might have missed. - Okay, so we agree that X is important, but we need to figure out Y before we move forward. Is that accurate?
