Having worked as a proofreader since 1981, I feel qualified to declare that if you have a genuine talent for spotting misspellings, grammatical errors, and fixing poor punctuation, you will be well equipped to work on most texts. There are exceptions, of course: if the text relates to an impenetrable subject *to you*, such as certain scientific papers, legal tracts, rocket science and the like, it is best to leave proofreading to a specialist in that subject.

While Grammarly is a great tool, it is not perfect. That's why having a second set of eyes is helpful. Writing skills are vital to being a good proofreader. Sometimes people don't understand the difference between a proofreader and a copy editor. They think they only want you to check things like grammar and spelling, but what they really want is help with clarity, readability and structure. A writer can try to find someone to proofread for free. Proofreading is not a freebie unless the proofreader agrees to it. A good case for needing a proofreader is the gentleman who suggested proofreading is fluff. You misspelled the software you are recommending. It's Grammarly, not grammerly.
