It should offer an overview, exposing areas ripe for enhancement and illuminating what works. Maturity is best categorized into progressive stages, each characterized by specific dimensions, criteria, and indicators - providing a nuanced understanding of an org's KM capabilities. These models are diverse - ranging from process and capability-focused to those emphasizing cultural dimensions. Examples include Siemens' KMMM, SEI's CMMI-KM, KPMG's KM2, and APQC's K3M, each offering unique perspectives. You can also create your own - scaling up or down, to fit the needs of your organization.

The KM Maturity Model must include the attitude of the organization. If the culture of the organization is to view KM as part of everyone's job and not just a task, then the organization will be a better team-based organization watching each other's backs and not out for themselves.

Let's put it to you this way, if you are looking for some low-hanging fruit where your organization's KM maturity level sits, start with an easy internal poll. If you start seeing answers to some fundamentals along the lines of "I don't know" or "Unsure", it may be time to put more effort into a KM initiative. For example, no professional should not recognize terms like "Generative AI", "use case", "data security" or "change management". Recognition doesn't mean complete understanding - rather it signifies an awareness of the themes of digital transformation that have become integral to knowledge sharing and organizational best practices in any environment that wants to ensure individual and collective knowledge is maintained and enhanced.

I always compare the evaluation of the maturity level of knowledge management in the organization to the determination of the language level! In other words, when an organization is considering starting knowledge management programs, it should know where to start. Therefore, it uses models to determine the maturity level of knowledge management. I remember that in one of the projects of implementing knowledge management solutions in a petrochemical company, the managing director mentioned that you should assume that we are the lowest level, and start from there! What he meant was that there is no need to evaluate the level of maturity, imagine that I am the most elementary level!

In initial stages, a lack of a centralized knowledge repository impeded information access. Advancing through the model, CompanyX implemented improved tools and fostered a collaborative culture. The outcomes were tangible—teams accessed information swiftly, reducing redundancy and expediting decision-making. This illustrates the KM Maturity Model's practical utility, guiding systematic evolution and delivering concrete benefits in knowledge management practices.

Utilizing a maturity model was and still is essential in growing our KM program. The maturity model allows KM practitioners to see gaps where they can improve and show value to your stakeholders. For example, if you rate very low on change management, you would most likely want to add a piece in your strategy to apply more change management principles or apply them better. Showing your stakeholders what you are doing well in or how you grew from year to year is also a key benefit. A maturity model gives you a constant baseline to measure how effective your KM program is, so you can continuously improve and grow.

I recommend starting with a "Knowledge Audit" - listen to the people in your organization carefully not with a pre-packaged message as to what you think they "need to have" for know-how resources but rather with an open mind as to the challenges they are facing and the gaps in their daily work flow in terms of resources. This will enable an baseline qualitative assessment and any omissions that need addressing in the short and long term. You will hear phrases like "I really could use X or Y" and that will get you on track as to maturity levels.

Some maturity assessment models are qualitative and some are quantitative. Depending on which approach the organization chooses, it can determine its desired maturity evaluation model. In our own projects, we usually use maturity assessment models Like APO, APQC & etc.

There's no one-size-fits-all! It's essential to match the model to your organization's unique landscape. It's great to know what's out there first. Don't shy away from tailoring an existing model or even crafting a bespoke one to fit your precise needs - you know your business! A few key considerations... 1. Your scope, purpose, and business size 2. KM practices and capabilities 3. The quality of data available to you 4. Stakeholders (RACI model is great for this piece!) 5. Ensure the model dovetails with any frameworks you already use. Enhance and align rather than complicate. The goal with a KM maturity model is a solution that not only assesses, but provides a way to enhance and scale your efforts!

@sasan At this stage we do not have definitive KPIs for the standard. Consequently the KMGN Maturity model used "typical implementations". But ISO 30414 Human Capital Reporting and associated Metrics should form a solid basis for KM KPIs

I would suggest to asses KM models that resonate with known global standards like the ISO 30414 ( Human Capital Reporting) or ISO 30401 (KM), as this alignment ensures a well-rounded, mature approach and a commitment to best practices and continual improvement. All journeys towards KM maturity should be deeply rooted in both the people and processes (with the help of technology).

Personal experience suggests involving key stakeholders in the selection process to ensure buy-in and tailored implementation. Additionally, seek a model that allows flexibility and scalability to adapt to evolving KM needs.

To apply a KM Maturity Model: Assessment: Begin with a comprehensive evaluation of current KM practices. Identify Stages: Recognize stages of maturity, from basic awareness to advanced integration. Set Goals: Define objectives for each stage, aligning with organizational needs. Implement Improvements: Gradually enhance processes, technology, and culture, moving through stages. Applying the model, they set a goal for a centralized repository. Implementing this, they enhanced collaboration. Progressing, they focused on technology, implementing advanced tools for better knowledge sharing. The model guided step-by-step improvements, resulting in a mature knowledge ecosystem, boosting productivity and innovation.

I agree with Lindsay on her approach. I would also add that in applying your KM Maturity Model the organization needs to regularly monitor the progress against the set KPIs/Metrics and milestones. Using feedback loops to continually refine and improve your KM practices will enable the organization to progressively move up the maturity levels as defined in the model.

Begin by conducting a thorough assessment of your organization's current KM practices using the chosen model's criteria. Identify strengths and weaknesses to understand areas needing improvement. Develop an action plan with specific goals, timelines, and responsibilities based on assessment results. Implement strategies such as training programs, technology upgrades, or process changes to align with higher maturity levels. Regularly review and adjust strategies to ensure continuous improvement and sustained KM maturity growth.

In the age of AI, it makes no sense for employees not to be able to contribute to sharing knowledge to the company's knowledge base. The role of a knowledge manager used to be collecting and facilitating info, and now it's more-so becoming the orchestrator of organization for all the incoming knowledge being shared by employees. While it's still early, this level of KM maturity is not very often seen.

A mature KM system ensures smooth knowledge transfer during onboarding & training. At a healthcare organisation where I assessed KM maturity, we evaluated the onboarding process to determine how well new employees accessed existing knowledge & integrated it into their work. We found that training materials were outdated & scattered across multiple systems, leading to inefficiencies in knowledge acquisition. After restructuring the onboarding programme to centralise knowledge resources & provide regular updates, employee ramp-up time decreased by 20%. This showed that while the KM system was functional, it required improvements in knowledge transfer processes to reach a higher maturity level.

KM Maturity models have (often) neglected to include measurements for the maturity of the information architecture. Information Architecture represents the structures that enable knowledge (content) to be delivered in a consumable manner for the users of KM systems. Information Architecture consists of the underlying structure of content (metadata, taxonomy, ontology). This structure empowers better organization, search and findability of content. This structure also evolves and has to be monitored and maintained and will contribute to the overall KM maturity of an organization.

When assessing your organization's progress along the KM Maturity Model it is important to have clear goals, processes and measurements (KPIs/Metrics) that will determine where you are as it relates to the KM maturity of your organization. I found it extremely helpful to develop a tool (perhaps in excel) that would include the areas being covered by the KM maturity model. These areas should include descriptions of each of functional area such as Knowledge Capture, the specific components within each functional area, such as explicit/tacit knowledge, findability, knowledge structure; specific KPIs & Metrics for each functional & maturity level, and identifiable evidence needed to achieve the specific level of maturity.

I have worked on a case study to solve an organisational check for KM maturity and can easily say that culture, process, technology and people tested against the phases like recognition, instantiation, value realisation and strategic phase is simple and easy to evaluate the KM maturity.
