Many in the OS community point to the fact that the code is open for review and modification, it tends to be safer when a vulnerability is discovered. I'm not opposed to copyright and intellectual rights. The problem with proprietary is that secrecy behind the software. Even Microsoft has opened up APIs and made parts of its software lines available for the OS community. In addition, Microsoft is the largest contributor to the Linux kernel outside of Linus Torvalds. There is benefit in the two working together.

OS firewalls are the easiest way to build an understanding of securing your network in a hands-on method. Testing and breaking a bench setup is easier than buying a proprietary system and realizing it doesn't do what you need it to or does it incorrectly is a loss in productivity and funds.
