It's about getting a real feel for what your customers, employees, partners, or beneficiaries experience - their needs, desires, and challenges, and understanding their culture and behavior. Had they listened to the conversations of the people carrying the water they would have realized that the water carriers were using the walking time to solve each other’s personal problems. The empathic solutions should have also accounted for this interpersonal dynamic.

Design thinking principles push us to be more: - curious about others' needs, wishes and wants - inclusive in bringing in different perspectives and voices and working with them - adventurous on looking at possibilities even they seem too far fetched to begin with - determined to continuously challenge ourselves and learn from each other and the process - aware of the danger of assumptions (we all know what those make of u and me ;-) ) - dynamic in our way of thinking, in making new connections, in reading the picture and being agile/flexible when things change - comfortable to let go of things that don't work any more in our strategic thinking processes.
