How do you apply boundary conditions and load vectors in FEA in Solidworks?

It is very important to take into consideration the 'real life' application that one is trying to run on FEA when assigning the boundary conditions. A proper understanding of the mechanics involved in the real life application could help in the process of determining what kind of loading and/or boundary conditions need to be applied in the FEA simulation. I like to think that there is an inverse relationship between how much/what kind of boundary conditions are implemented against the accuracy if the final results. FEA users must keep that in mind when making this decision.

The most common error in FEA is the constraints. To many or to much constraints make your model to stiff. A too stiff model gives incorrect defelctions and thus incorrect stresses. Use gravity to judge the stiffness of your model.

True fixed - fixed or pinned bcs are easily simulated in FE models but seldom physically exist in nature! Bcs are often a function of loading and friction.

It is important to understand how stress flows in your design, most hot spots can occur around sharp edges and contact points and can cause extreme spikes in results.

Be aware the using soft springs can modify the end results for deflection and other criteria. Soft springs are useful, but should only be used with the engineers discretion to reduce 'noisy' evaluations.

Sometimes, your FEA is failing for a really good reason. One time I had a retaining ring popping out of a groove and 'excessive displacements' were evaluated by the model and crashing my FEA analysis. After reducing the load in the design I found that the retaining ring was a hot spot on my design and needed extra clearance.
