Defining purpose is applicable everywhere when it comes to growing a career. For purposes related to portfolio and capstone projects, figuring out about the audience is important, but so are reflecting on your interests and goals connected to the audience. Questions related to uncovering and understanding your passion and what you like to achieve in your career can help identify the strengths and weaknesses of your portfolio and capstone projects, which you can leverage to connect better with the targeted audience authentically. Lots of time, the weaknesses of our portfolio and capstone projects are not truly weaknesses but ready opportunities for further work and development in our career and interests.

Although insanely popular, this might be the most misleading career advice according to a Best selling author: Follow your passion. Instead Cal Newport advocates for pursuing one's curiosity instead. A similar approach should be employed when hoping to leverage a capstone project. Consider a challenge that you are genuinely interested in solving. Are you entrepreneurial? Consider some of the pain points of your ideal client. Consider the skills you bring to the table or want to develop. In graduate school, I took on projects geared towards accelerating student success and college readiness. Those exercises helped me get started in higher education and furnished me with lots of tools to provide tutoring, and college prep services.

Not all feedback will be applicable to the moment to moment actions/projects one elects, but all feedback has potential usefulness for present and future response and repertoire. Optimal growth, professional development, and goal achievement however cannot happen without both feedback (other to self/future to past) AND feedforward (self to other/past to future). By understanding the nonlinear nature of energy flows, one can pull the past into the present, push the present into the future, be productively adjusted by others and productively predispose others to your contributions. Both feedback and feedforward need to be built into your ongoing best work.

Your reflection and feedback should also include not only what you did but how you did it. Try to answer the following questions: 1) What part of this project was challenging to me? What did I do to meet the challenge? What did I learn about myself? 2) How will I approach a new project the next time. Did I acquire skills so that I can be better, faster, more productive, a better team player, etc.? By answering these questions, you can better communicate your value to future employers or higher management.

For instance, why have you included this research paper in your portfolio/capstone? What are you hoping it conveys about you as an aspiring professional? Connect this by also thinking from the reviewer/employer’s perspective: What transferable skills are you hoping to highlight from each piece? You want them to effectively visualize how your current skills and experiences will enable you to be successful in their organization.

I am constantly working to ensure my efforts are aligned. I work in conjunction with a plan for my personal and professional goals that is stated as a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time bound) Goal. When opportunities and projects are presented that do not align to my SMART Goals, I do not proceed. This has helped me so much in refining my my focus and targeting my efforts. Reaching and exceeding established goals has been enhanced with this strategy. I share this technique with other women leaders. Sometimes, I serve as a guide and sometimes an accountability partner. It is extremely rewarding to help others excel.

In my experience, the best portfolios are an extension of an individual's passion. The concern about "professionalism" should never cloud the aspects of one's work that reflects their identity and experiences. When one combines their passion, identity, experiences, and expertise, a portfolio will align with one's aspirations. In thinking of aspirations, I am conscious of the fact that I went to college when the mantra of the day was, "follow your passion." When the economy tanks (as it does every few decades), many were urged to follow the money instead. While I will not completely disagree with that advice, especially as a first-generation American who experienced poverty, I believe our goals should reach deeper than our pockets.
