How do you align your department's objectives with the organization's strategy and vision?

If you're in charge of strategic planning, yes you should look at corporate artifacts -- strategic plan, the annual report, the website, and other sources of information. But this is just the starting point. Understand that your role is to see what everyone does not see, to help un-earth organizational blind spots -- which everyone, especially big organizations have. I like to take a broader view and read the World Economic Forum's Global Risk Report and watching key speakers from the forum.

Its is quite important that you have a lot of interest in the vision as well as the product or service the organization is providing, when you are rooted in such matters it gives you a clear picture and understanding of what is expected of you which in turn guide you on understanding its strategy

The basis of integrating organization-wide goals with the goals of a particular department implies a close acquaintance with the concept of the company. On the communication with leaders, I think that the major steps are to discuss with them about the objectives and have clear how they would like the staff to perform and then proceed to the development of objectives in my team that can be quantified. These include also reviewing coordination meetings and interaction between the departments to always align and change as the organization grows. Hear it’s about establishing links between work they do every day, and why they do it, that’s it about aligned perception of organizational goals.

For corporate legal departments and other internal facing corporate departments, you are better off using OKR's so you can align KPI's with the objectives of both the legal department and the organization. Always align your objectives with that of the organization so that they can see that you are contributing in moving the needle forward.

Developing the objectives for my department starts with understanding where and how my strengths and my department’s expertise can add value and navigate the firm’s strategy. I pay much attention to the specificity of the goals, which are challenging but realistic, and the relation of these goals to the overall vision. I also review these objectives from time to time and include team members in the process of setting goals, which also increases their ownership and makes it possible for us to respond to any changes in the important objectives of the company.

Communicating internally is different from communicating with other departments. Other Departments What ever it is you want them to do is not their job. Sure it helps the organization forward, but it is likely outside their scope of work. Best thing to do here is to get an executive sponsor to endorse the project. Otherwise, you will not only get frustrated with how the project does not move, other departments will also be unhappy with your department.

Effective communication and cooperation are critical components of the success of the department. It is important to be clear with my staff and other teams that need to be informed and that the flow of information should be free. Having meetings, providing feedback on the process, and making it a priority in the company forms a basis trust and better teamwork. When I listen more keenly to my team and consult other departments within the organization, tackling problems becomes easier and the enterprise’s objectives can be achieved as a team.

From time to time, reviewing and updating the objectives of the department is important to ensure that all standards of the organization are met none the less. I always ensured that I have reviewed our objectives often and aligned with the new goals that we may have because of a change of strategy or the market. This way not only maintains the current work as significant but also encourages the team members by presenting how the work is useful and the achievement accomplished.

If you have a good plan, you will only need to do this maybe twice a year. Having a good platform to track your KPI's will also help everyone in the team share a dashboard to track the work that is being accomplished.

However, what I have not mentioned is the need for them to create a culture of practicing resilience within the team. Promoting learning and innovation makes everyone adaptable to new issues and opportunities in this period. Moreover, appreciating individual and team performances often makes employees feel that their work always has a purpose and keeps us in check with our broader objectives. Including these aspects in our strategy can make the result of our department even stronger
