How do you align conflicting design visions with your team members to create a cohesive final product?

When working on a collaborative project, it's important I spend time on getting alignment on problem statement. Through interactive process, a common vision emerges that often helps to understand each other. Many a times, we start designing on the project without establishing a core problem understanding. Start there.

Start by creating an open platform where each team member can present their ideas and explain their vision. This ensures everyone feels heard and valued. Focus on the project's shared objectives. What is the ultimate purpose of the design? Aligning the overall goals can bring conflicting ideas together under a common vision. Encourage team members to build on each other's ideas rather than viewing them as competing. Where possible, find compromises or hybrid solutions that incorporate the strengths of different ideas. When conflicts arise, turn to data, user feedback, or industry best practices to guide decisions. This objective input can help settle disputes and align the team around evidence-based choices.

Attachment to our ideas can create blindspots, leading to mistakes in our decision-making. To spark collaboration on conflicting visions, have the team switch sides and evaluate the pros and cons of each idea as if it were their own. This technique enhances critical thinking and helps the team gain a comprehensive perspective by skillfully assessing both the benefits and drawbacks of each vision, leading to a more informed and unified approach.

To align different design ideas, first, have open discussions where everyone shares their thoughts. Focus on the project’s main goals and find common ground between ideas. Combine the best parts of each vision, and compromise when needed. Ensure the final design meets the project goals and works for the user or client. Regularly check in with the team to keep everyone on the same page.

Knowing what you don't want is just as important as knowing what you do want. I would say that, in some cases, it's even more important because you lose interest in what seems good but doesn't create real impact in the business.

Defining clear objectives is essential when aligning conflicting design visions within a team. During my time working on corporate projects, I found that starting with a discussion about the end goals helps everyone stay focused on the bigger picture. By establishing what the final product should achieve, we created a shared understanding that allowed us to navigate differences more effectively. Aligning everyone with crystal clear objectives and goals allows the filtering out of ideas that don’t serve the primary purpose. A laser focus on user needs and solving problems ensures designs are functional and purposeful. Conflicts become catalysts.

In these situations, you have to proactively consider how you will engage the conversation. Start with the positive / where things align, and then discuss the differences (not the right / wrong). Talk through the why they are different, as some times you will realize it's for the same reason, just a different outcome. From there you make the connections to identify something new.

Fostering collaboration is crucial for harmonising diverse design visions and addressing conflicts constructively. By creating an open and inclusive environment in brainstorming sessions - everyone's empowered to share their unique perspectives leading to more holistic and innovative solutions that probably wouldn’t come from solo thinking. Techniques like mind mapping, sketching and rapid prototyping help visualise and refine ideas more quickly. The sooner the iterations - the sooner the solution is shaped by feedback. For me, celebrating synergies and valuing each contribution not only helps alleviate conflict - but also strengthens team cohesion.

Remaining respectful and open is key - as is remaining neutral. Setting aside personal preferences and concentrating on project goals keeps the design process objective, user-centred, and strategically sound. Incorporating objective criteria like analytics, A/B testing results, and market research grounds decisions in solid data and proven solutions. This makes design choices even smarter and diffuses conflict even more. It ensures outcomes are on point with user needs and project goals and that design conflict isn’t distracting or restrictive to progression towards project goals.

When evaluating trade-offs, I consider how each compromise impacts user experience, the project goals and objectives - and of course the integrity of the design and/or tech build. Understanding core needs and goals helps identify what's non-negotiable and where there's room for flexibility. Another great application for MoSCoW framework thinking. For example, during an eCommerce revamp, I managed a conflict between a visually complex, but also striking design and a simpler, user-friendly interface. Through workshops, user feedback and A/B testing, I guided the team to a compromise integrating key visual elements while streamlining navigation and optimising site performance.

Brainstorm, brainstorm, brainstorm.... With leaders, leads, line staff, whomever will come and participate. Decide priorities, try it out and meet and re-adjust. I will walk a thousand miles if I have input and know where we are heading.
