How do you add trendlines, confidence intervals, and R-squared values to your charts in Excel?

Trend lines can also be used to make predictions about future values of the dependent variable based on the independent variable. By extending the trend line beyond the range of the existing data, you can estimate the value of the dependent variable for a given value of the independent variable. However, it is important to note that a trend line is only an approximation and may not accurately represent the relationship between the variables. Therefore, it is always important to evaluate the fit of the trend line and the strength of the relationship between the variables before making any predictions or decisions based on it.

Confidence intervals can be used to compare estimates or measurements between groups or across time. If the confidence intervals for two groups or time periods do not overlap, it suggests that the difference between them is statistically significant and not due to chance. Perhaps the most important thing to consider is...should you do this at all? Does your audience need that R-squared value? Will it help them understand the data or might it be a distraction? Does your audience even know what that value represents? Will the confidence interval be misinterpreted to represent a range of values, or are you confident your audience knows what a confidence interval is? And is the trendline going to help them understand the correlation or make them think it is more concrete than it is? These are the questions you should ask yourself before you worry about how to do it. Should you even do it in the first place? The answer might be yes! But if not, just because you know how to do it doesn't mean you should.

The article highlights adding these values to a chart, but as Bill mentioned in his comment, is it best for the audience? I find myself using the corresponding functions, such as LINEST, in the spreadsheet to get the values so I can use them to continue my analysis and thereby add the forecast part to the visual.
