Beginner teachers often put too much into a lesson plan and then rush through thinking that they need to complete the lesson. With all students, but especially beginners, don't be afraid of silence. Give students time to think and formulate their answers before asking your next question. (Someone once described this to me as continuing to click on something when your computer is not responding. Eventually you give so many instructions that the programme crashes!)

I have found gaming and modeling techniques helpful. Naming games are effective in having beginners introduce themselves in appropriate sentences. I have the learners go into a circle while I stand in the middle with a preformed paper ball. I say my first name and two things I love that have the same speech sound as the first alphabet of my name. I then toss a preformed paper ball at any of them. The person who makes the catch would have to do as I did. This helps in modeling how sentences should be structured and a fun way to remember names and objects.

Creating appropriate tasks, changing activities, and including breaks are vital to successful teaching. What is also important to remember is to include movement in your lessons. If students are required to do all the tasks glued on their chairs, their engagement level will decrease as the blood flow slows down from sitting for more than 20 minutes, which results in distraction or lack of attention. I always consider this when planning my lessons. Simple tasks like acting out the new vocabulary (body parts, action verbs, illnesses, daily routines, hobbies, emotions, school facilities, etc.), dancing to the song, or sharing with other students involve necessary movement breaks for students of all ages.

Materials play a vital role in varying pacing and adapting questioning techniques. A2 or below A2 level require short yet clear instructions and ICQ which help for better understanding. Pacing can be altered depending on the procedure in each stage. i.e, Lead-in or Warmer could be quite fast in pace while using moderate energy level when highlighting the target language in a set context. This reminds the recent encounter with A1 group to whom I began the lesson with a lead-in of fast pacing that includes revision task on passive voice and stage 2 consisted of guided visualization in which I gradually changed the pacing and energy level from high to low by using a calm background music and deliver the instructions in a slow manner.

Variation and differentiation makes room for the teacher to cater for the learning needs of the learners at different levels of learning. Learning should move from simple to complex only when the learners have shown ability in doing simple tasks and are set to take up comparetively more challenging tasks. For me, follow up questions are a great tool for checking if learning is taking place. For example; Nigeria is in West Africa. Is Nigeria in the west indies? The learner should emphasize that Nigeria is in West Africa to show that the initial statement was understood.

The Socratic method fosters critical thinking and deepens understanding through strategic questioning. By encouraging students to articulate and defend their ideas, it enhances communication and participation, using both lower-order and higher-order questions effectively. For example, in my Business English class, I asked, "What are the key factors for successful market entry?" followed by, "Can you provide an example from a recent business case?" and "How might a company mitigate risks in a new market?" This approach made learning more engaging and meaningful.

I have used the following questioning technique for a long time, and it has helped both me and my students. Begin your class by asking questions about what you taught them in the previous class. End your class by what you taught them in that particular class. This way, you do not have to plan much, and, the students recap their learning too. Stations are a great and underutilized visual way for instructors to see and prep for scaffolding for all age groups. I try to fit stations into every lesson I plan. For example in a lesson that requires peer review, station 1 can include sentence frames with fill in the blank options. Station 2 could be a verbally recorded review. Station 3 would be a free write review. Assign students to their starting stations based on their current levels. Within each, you can provide further scaffolding tools such as a script.

One rule I set in all of my classrooms, be it an individual lesson on Zoom with a six-year-old who doesn't speak English at all or an in-person lesson in a classroom full of upper-intermediate adult speakers, is that mistakes are good. All (!) mistakes are good because not knowing something is the first step to learning something, and by saying the words "I don't know" or "I don't understand", my students show me that they trust me to help them learn AND that they trust me to not berate them for not being perfect.

I focus on one specific learning objective per lesson, and remain focused on it until each student demonstrates at least comfort utilizing it before moving on to the next objective. For example, survival English: requesting help while grocery shopping - vocab, grammar and pragmatics all included in one scripted question: Excuse me, where is __________? This may sound overly simplistic, but in a classroom setting with true beginners/new immigrants (less than 30 days arrival) affective barriers are high. Avoiding typical academic assessment by allowing unlimited in-class practice with fellow students until all demonstrate confidence - not perfection - using the target language, builds positive internal affective scaffolds for students.

This is a sensible, workable approach. It adds a dynamic to the exchanges. I used it a while ago in an adult education setting where students were technicians in a tech company who had to get to grips with basic English for their work -mostly understanding technical descriptions and instructions. Almost all if them had left school at 14/15. It worked very well.

Make ESL exciting with lively conversations! It's more than just practicing language; it's a fun sharing of thoughts. Try working in pairs, doing group activities, and acting out roles. Imagine the class as a stage, and students as the main characters. Change partners and roles for a language adventure. Keep things interesting with taking turns and sharing ideas. Interaction with peers is vital in language learning, but it does not come naturally to most. When teaching younger students, it is essential to set rules, explain the expectations, and model and scaffold the collaboration. Encouraging students to be responsible for their own learning is great, but the line between that and letting them run free is very thin. Slow release of responsibility will help them understand the desired outcome of these interactions and set them up for success later on.

Use pair and group activities: Assign tasks that require students to work together. Use interactive games(quizzes, board games, or puzzles to make learning fun) Peer teaching: Have students teach each other grammar rules or correct sentences. Use Role-playing and games like "Taboo" or "Charades".

Plan on recycling the same vocabulary and grammar in multiple lessons. Even if students appear to have learned something, they need reinforcement over a longer period to ensure that they can use it as a basis for further growth.

As an English teacher to young learners, tests or surveys can be rather inappropriate. Formative evaluation, practise has shown, where children give their own feelings and beliefs on how well they understand the kowledge in question, proved invaluable. Not only does the teacher see how well they know, but also children learn how to express themselves and in that internalise their knowledge.

Sometimes, it takes time. As an ESL teacher to very young learners, I can confidently say that patience is the key. While it might seem that the students are not absorbing any of the lesson contents, it is vital to understand, that their brains are going through a lot and need time to process the code-switching, environment switching and their new peers, before they settle into the routine and start using the language. The best way is to be patient and consistent as well as follow their flow to keep their motivation high.

Adult ESL students are very aware of their language needs and shortcomings, which can a be a great benefit for them and for you as a teacher, as they are usually able to vocalise what kind of support they need. Providing materials for pre-studying is a great way how to encourage them to participate more, as they gain confidence in the language eith preparation.
