The number one and two things an employer looks for is desire to learn and work with a team. Understand that the success of technical support teams lives and dies on the ability to communicate. You WILL run into issues that you don't know how to fix. Employers want to know that you're not too proud to raise your hand and ask for help or even better, to offer help to your team. You should also keep in mind that tech support is, at its core, a customer service position. You need to demonstrate that you can set expectations for the end user as well as make them feel heard and important.

I wholly recommend to staying true to the basics; a deep sense of empathy/passion (helps to appreciate the pain of the users that depend on your application to work), an open mind to learning (helps to acquire knowledge on what is unknown, and more experience on what is known), and professionalism on the job (which largely involves knowing your platform/application well and doing what should be done at the right time).

Researching the company and the role and go a step further know why they are hiring for the role, simply know the company/organization pain point like is it a new project they want implemented or are they expanding and thats the reason they require more technical support. This way you will be able to ace the interview.

Do the research! Check out the companies' website, do they mention mission, vision, and values. Learn what they do, know how you can fit and help. Is it something you can get behind? It is very important to ask questions about the onboarding and training process during the interview. Ask about the tools you will use when are employed eventually. This will allow you to prepare enough before resumption. Also, ask about what a typical day looks like for the role. This includes the workload and expected delivery time. And what does the feedback system look like when you are lagging behind? Is there some form of support and handholding for "low performance"?

Make sure to close the deal… At the end of interview when your turn comes to ask questions; the last question of your few questions, should be; Do you or any (panel members) have any concerns in my skills/abilities or gaps in my experiences that I need to further clarify to be your candidate of choice today? Good or bad, you will know where you stand with your interviewer(s) on knowing your chances to be hired for this position. There should be no guess work here, as to move on to your next opportunity.

You need to demonstrate a firm understanding of the product/s that you will be responsible for and the ability to share this knowledge in a professional manner to the customer. It would also help to understand the positioning of the product/s in the market.

Effective technical support requires empathy for the customers. People need to be believed and heard, regardless of how correct they may be. You can approach the concerns they raise with curiosity. If a system behaves differently than expected, is it because the customer is doing something "wrong" or because they have a use case that wasn't considered? Is this an opportunity to educate the customer and provide a solution, or can the product be adjusted to meet their needs? This is different from saying that the customer is always right; that matters less than acknowledging and addressing their needs.

Like others have mentioned, empathy and advocacy are really important skills. As technical support, we stand between a confused/angry customer and a busy product team. Skills in managing expectations therefore goes a long way in maintaining a realistic customer relationship, besides addressing technical concerns from the customer.

Technical support starts with emotional intelligence. It seems counter-intuitive because people reach you with problems that need fixed. That being said customer satisfaction metrics are a thing. You need to not only solve the problem for/with the customer, you need to make sure the customer FEELS taken care of and that you CARE about them, their org, and their problem. This also means prompt follow-up, clear instruction, and sometimes de-escalating the client so you can get to work on the issue itself.

Be authentic, but pleasant. There is a place for realism, but hold off on the complaints about your most difficult client especially if you're still developing your customer service skills. Many technicians are not coached about customer service. An awesome customer service staffer with great researching skill with less than 2 years in IT would serve my team better. An expert with a condescending tone is not approachable and is terrible at easing the client in a panic or rush with major deadlines. Research the culture because some companies welcome and somehow thrive off the "tech is always right." It just does not fly for smaller companies growing their clientele. It is not acceptable for corporations, but it's common.

For me, showcasing your soft skills is way more important than the rest. Use real examples where there was an issue you attended to and highlight communication, teamwork, customer service, problem solving skills etc. This will definitely give you a great advantage.

The best luck I've had both before the job and after is the follow up. In fact, I do a follow up call with my clients every day when I first log on. I follow up on work that was completed yesterday, or I follow up on a project status and let the client know what we are doing today/this week. The best feedback I receive from my clients is that they feel like I care about them when I do follow up calls. If you can, call the interviewer the day after and say something like "Hey Dave, thank you for taking the time to interview me yesterday! I'm excited to go through this process together and I look forward to our next steps. If we need to connect, please call me at 919-772-4672." Do this first thing before Dave has his coffee for max results.

One thing I have found helpful is address concerns or clarifications. If there were any points discussed during the interview that you feel need further clarification or if you wish to address any concerns, do so politely. Remember to keep your follow-up concise, professional, and focused on expressing gratitude and enthusiasm for the opportunity.

If the number of applicants is shown by LinkedIn to be 100+, brevity in your follow-up is essential. It is also helpful to provide the recruiter with thoughtful memory queues; remember, you want to be easy to offer. Finally, opt for the least invasive communication method that matches previously held correspondence. For example, here’s how a quick follow-up via LinkedIn should go: “Hi, [NAME]! It was great speaking with you on [DATE]. As we discussed, I will standby until [DEADLINE DATE/TIME] to hear from you or a colleague concerning next steps. In the meantime, here are some recent work samples that speak to [CONCERN THAT WAS DISCUSSED OR HIGH VALUE REQUIREMENT THAT WAS EMPHASIZED]. Thank you for granting me your fullest consideration!”
