How do geotechnical engineers collaborate with other civil engineers?

Unfortunately, sometimes it is observed that structural engineers assume bearing capacity values while designing foundation systems without doing proper Geotechnical investigation. This can lead to serious issues as soil bearing capacity calculation is very important from structural safety and stability point of view. Soil bearing capacity calculation is more challenging due to various factors: 1) Soil Variability 2) Test Methods 3) Depth consideration 4) Soil properties 5) Complex loading 6) Safety factors 7) Environment conditions 8) Geological factors 9) Regulatory requirements To overcome these challenges, it's essential to work with experienced geotechnical engineers who can perform thorough site investigations.

In terms of experience as a Structural Engineer (Bridges), the role of Geotech Engineers is of prime importance. I had been a part of multiple projects where I used to calculate the capacities and soil springs of piles with respect to some specific literatures and handbooks and apply them to the structural model for analysis. On the other hand, there were projects where I had to rely on inputs from geotech engineers. This depends on the level of accuracy one wants in his/her design.Especially when you have highly indeterminate structures like integral bridges or structures in high seismic zone, Soil Structure Interaction (SSI) is of paramount importance where we look for accurate convergence of geotech parameters telling us the truestory.

Collaboration with structural engineers is of immense importance. Geotechnical engineers have deeper insights into soil, rock, and subsurface interactions with the designed foundation. Therefore, geotechnical engineers play a crucial role in ensuring that structural drawings include appropriate guidelines for the placement of foundations. For example: 1) Ensuring proper compaction of the subsurface. 2) Providing guidelines for placing lean before foundation. 3) Considering guidelines for addressing scour and liquefaction. 4) Establishing guidelines for placing pile tips in underlying weaker soils over strong soils.

One thing worth mentioning, is that not all Geotechnical 'Engineers' are actually Engineers, from Faculty of Civil Engineering, but Geologists with one year Master's degree in Geotechnical studies. Thus most of these cases, not all of course, do not know much about Structural, Highway, Marine Engineering basics. And thus cannot really fully understand how to design Geotechnical projects, and follow what the parameters, coefficients etc that the Structural Engs use in their designs, making scientifical communication difficult between the various engineering disciplines.
