There is a very important, and often under-valued, element to genre convention and that is genre and music. Composers, unless they are celebrities, are very seldomly mentioned in critical appraisals of genre films, yet they can subtely enter us into a nostalgic era in an almost sub-limital way. Deirdre Gribbin (my wife) is a classical composer who has just composed the evocative music for a new doc about the Irish Catholic homes and baby scandals- STOLEN, a new documentary film by Margo Harkin. Without referring to period music of the time, the music gently harkens us back to a specific and place era, enhancing the sense of place which the documentary genre requires and is often devoid of if music is not carefully taken into consideration.

The colour palette in films used for costumes is also crucial. For example, Kenneth Branagh in his 1989 film version of Henry V used used only muddy browns and muted reds. This was partly to create the opposite impression than that created by Laurence Olivier in his 1944 version, the costumes in this earlier film were brightly coloured and based on a medieval, illuminated Book of Hours. As audience members we read these colours instinctively.

Working with period tools can be effective- for example- it was suggested (though not confirmed) that Coppola used a late 19th century hand cranked movie camera for some of the scenes in Dracula- particularly when the Count has adapted young form and is in town having a 'day about'. The uneven speed of the film and the sepia tone along with the silent movie form adds a lot to the believability of being an observer in that time period.
