For example, a rule-based algorithm might use a grammar rule to identify the subject and the object of a sentence, or a dictionary to look up the meaning of a word. Rule-based algorithms are fast and easy to implement, but they have some limitations. They cannot handle ambiguity, complexity, or variation in natural language, and they require a lot of manual effort to create and maintain the rules and dictionaries.

Even though GenAI and LLMs are incredibly powerful, please keep simple rule-based algorithms in mind. They are super simple to apply, and well-understood. Business units can communicate e.g. keyword patterns or regex to have an impact on a solution to a business problem, for instance in detection of named entities or simple classifications.

2 Statistical algorithms

Statistical algorithms are another common type of NLP algorithms. They use mathematical models and probability theory to learn from large amounts of data and make predictions or decisions based on statistics. For example, a statistical algorithm might use a frequency table to determine the most likely word to follow a given word, or a Bayesian network to infer the sentiment of a text. Statistical algorithms are more flexible and adaptable than rule-based algorithms, but they also have some drawbacks. They need a lot of data to train and validate the models, and they can be prone to errors or biases due to noise or outliers in the data.

Neural network algorithms are the most advanced and popular type of NLP algorithms. When building with neural networks, keep in mind that a data-centric approach makes a lot of sense. In addition to testing different architectures, a data-centric approach helps you to figure out which examples in your dataset cause strenghts and weaknesses of your model, giving you a great insight into the black box of a NN.

4 Hybrid algorithms

Hybrid algorithms are a combination of different types of NLP algorithms. They use the strengths and advantages of each type to overcome the weaknesses and limitations of the others. For example, a hybrid algorithm might use a rule-based algorithm to preprocess the data, a statistical algorithm to filter the data, and a neural network algorithm to process the data.
