How are databases being integrated into GIS for better data management?

A database to maintain spatial data undoubtedly is a main factor. To have a convenient choice between a variety of databases is relayed on data size and hardware requirements in server or device. For example, Oracle is one of the perfect matches to work with spatial data but in an enterprising situation. PostGIS is another option on the table, which means open sourced tools could be used without licence and handle or maintain spatial data with the use of Postgre plugins. As a result, the right choice depends on the situation and the workload.

Cela permet de capitaliser sur les données déjà disponibles, de les enrichir et de les lier à de nouvelles couches d'informations collectées. Par exemple, nous avons pu intégrer des fichiers fonciers et cadastraux aux données d'enquête terrain dans plusieurs villes, permettant la création de plans d'adressage beaucoup plus complets et utiles aux municipalités.

D'après mon expérience, l'intégration de bases de données hétérogènes dans un SIG représente souvent un défi technique qu'il faut anticiper. J'ai trouvé les outils ETL open source très utiles pour faciliter les appariements et transformations lors de l'intégration de bases de données au SIG.

L'intégration de bases de données dans un SIG permet d'améliorer la qualité des données grace à des contr?les et des règles de validation. J'ai pu constater dans mes projets que la consolidation de sources multiples est complexe mais apporte une vision plus complète et fiable de l'information. Cette intégration, lorsqu'elle est bien réalisée, compense largement l'investissement initial nécessaire. La définition précoce des contr?les qualité à appliquer facilite l'automatisation partielle des traitements ETL et accélère la détection des problèmes.

Maintenance of databases is also a very critical aspect to using it in GIS. We do not want our queries or analyses to take hours. There are several tools and techniques required to maintain the databases, often requiring time, money and resources. GIS platforms offer a host of tools to understand where improvement is required and do them, however a database administrator is required to regularly tune the database, compress it or shrink it to reduce the size and improve the performance. Table partitioning is also an important feature in this regard.

Dans mes projets SIG, j'ai rencontré des difficultés pour consolider des sources non standardisées avec des typologies très variées. Cette intégration accro?t les co?ts en nécessitant plus de ressources techniques et humaines pour la maintenance et la sécurité des données. Le plus grand défi reste de faire converger tous ces formats, structures et règles métiers différents vers un modèle de données unifié et cohérent.
