How can you write website headers that grab your visitors' attention?

Make sure your website header, or hero, is about the visitor and what they hope for and want. Write it so they see themselves. For example, instead of saying We are the preeminent web design company for SaaS startups, you'd say: You're a SaaS startup and want your audience to understand how to (fill in the blank with your solution). There's an immediate connection there IF you've identified their problem. That's the few seconds you have to get their attention. Make the most of it, by grabbing them by their self-interest. It's what motivates that next step you want: scrolling down, reading and engaging.

Consider that people may find you through a search engine. There are generally great prospects, because they are actively looking for what you offer. In order to be found by those search engines, you want to make sure you understand the exact words people use when they search for what you offer. That way, the search engine 'knows' to bring people to your site. This is another area where solid audience research will serve you really well. You want to know how people talk about what you offer, what language they use and even what they most often search for.

I marketing we say that people do things for one of two reasons: to avoid pain or to gain pleasure. Those are both very emotional areas. You need to dig into that to get people to connect with what you're saying. We talk about pain killers as opposed to vitamins. Either dig into what they're feeling - the pain that your solution solves. Or into the aspiration of what they are hoping to achieve. As you do this remember, we all do much more to avoid pain that we do to gain pleasure. We're used to putting off pleasure. I'll do that when. When I retire, or have more money, or more time. When we're in pain, however, we want out. So if you invoke the pain, your prospect has the problem front of mind and wants a solution.
