How can you write a song that is both commercially successful and artistically satisfying?

Write the song from your truth, use all your knowledge to connect to your pop culture, and take your time! Use the ABC formula and be sure to create a bridge that will satisfy your artistic side and impress your critics! Bottom line, again be true to yourself!

Very few artists attempt to be "commercial." The goal is always to write the best song possible, which includes a compelling melody and perfectly written lyric. That alone takes a huge amount of work. Even work for hire has to honor the request of the client. Commercial tunes come from the complete dominance of great artistry. Read any top 10 artist discussing their latest hit. None of them knew they were writing a hit, they wrote the best tunes within their artistic aesthetic. Producers, labels, A&R discovered the commericality.

I used to analyse and suffer because I wanted to have music that is commercial but also appealing. It’s only when I let go of the outcome, I was able to create without pressure, when you enjoy it that inspiration will come. Just create what you want to hear

Of course you can! Think something like Macklemores "Same Love'. That would have been very satisfying as well as commercially Successful. What we're pointing towards is the idea of artistic integrity, and assuming commercially successfully and artistic integrity are mutually exclusive. They're not. I feel like a better question is: Do artists actually have to sacrifice their artistic integrity to be commercially successful, and what is that line of integrity anyway? you might release hundreds of songs over a lifetime, some will have more meaning than others. I think maintaining focus on the overall message and truth over time is what matters, not adjusting under the assumption that that's what 'the audience' wants.

I find writing in CONCEPT can be very rewarding because it is more than just one song or idea ?? I love motion picture and musical soundtracks ?? When I was young we would all go to sleep listening to the vinyl soundtrack album for THE WIZARD OF OZ ??????

Write what you love and someone else will love it too. Always write from your own perspective. There's a saying "you can't pick your fans, but your fans can pick you". It's true. Be you and watch who else feels that you're telling their stories. It's a blast!

Dig deep and immerse yourself in wonder and curiosity. Discover methods and adapt them to spark inspiration within you! Imagine you wrote Mozart - Symphony No. 40 in G minor, K. 550 in the 1700's and you wrote this after you had your first dance with the love of your life, or your daughter was born, or you made love for the first. It's a whole different perspective. So find ways to inspire yourself to then spark magic to write something special!!!

Your inspiration to write music only comes from within. You must be honest with yourself and write about your experiences personal or otherwise. I always say that we all experience the same emotions at some point in our lives. It's how you interpret those experiences that bring out the feelings inside.

Give yourself room to make mistakes. The mess is what leads to magic! Also when you're collaborating don't instantly cut an idea off..rabbit holes can help you find the magic!!!

This I can mostly agree with because all of my sound is experimental, original, innovative, and hopefully memorable. I guess it comes from my upbringing where I learned to write from the heart with the fear of rejection hanging over my head.

I believe no one writes a flawless song. However, a song should be worked to a point where you feel you have done the best you can do. Striving for perfection is the goal, however, there is point where you have to let it go to spread it wings.

Since I have yet to actually write a "commercially successful" song (LOL) or at least nobody has recognized it as of yet, I can only speak to being artistically satisfied. Which I am because I am doing something I love and the money part of it was never really that big a deal. It would be awesome though. You cannot be successful if you do not put in effort. A ton of it. Even with all that the music industry is vast and filled with talented people so it's hard to stand out. The whole dynamic of the industry isn't really set up to make every song writer rich. But that's ok. Don't be afraid to try. Keep on growing. Make connections. Surround yourself with people that are positive and help you grow. Have fun doing what you love.

Writing music is a very personal endeavor and if you are not writing for self-satisfaction you will probably not be very successful in reaching what is probably unrealistic goals. Write for yourself, don't rely on others' approval. Your songs are created to satisfy your emotions and hopefully reach others who can identify with your writing. There will be someone out there who identifies with your music. Whether it happens in this life or the next, stay honest with yourself and enjoy the process.

"commercially successful" is unpredictable and changes with the season. think of songs that were surprise hits, or songs that were the B side of singles some disc jockey in a small market played and became big hits. that doesn't mean one should ignore trends and conventions of the genre you're writing in. but if you write something and declare "this is gonna be a hit!" it most likely won't be. just write the best damned song you can and the rest will take care of itself.
