How can you write an effective job ad for an IT position?

Keywords. Keywords. Keywords. We don’t need to dump all but make sure that all keywords used in the profile are connected to the job itself. Also competencies are very important to mention as that’s what is going to make them achieve what they want!

Here are some simple yet powerful tips: 1. Before posting the job ad, define your candidate profile clearly so you can then craft an effective job ad. 2. Showcase your company vision; let your job ad reflect your company spirit and the role's value. 3. Be specific with the title, responsibilities, required skills, and expectations. In a sea of generic job descriptions, clear and honest communication wins hearts. 4. Highlight learning chances and job benefits, making your role stand out. 5. Include the role's budget or a salary range for transparency. 6. Outline the hiring process stages for candidate awareness. 7. Post, test, and measure ad effectiveness. If needed, make adjustments to enhance and improve its impact.

Based on my own experience, the titles of the positions in different countries and regions are different. Before publishing a vacancy, check the correct title of the position in the region where specialists need to be hired. Describe in detail the following aspects: Hiring process; Technical stack of the project; Information about the team; Responsibilities and tasks for new specialist (preferably for 3,6 and 12 months); System of motivation, bonuses, and benefits; It will help make the hiring process transparent and fast.

In my experience, the job title is often more important in recruiting than we think. So I recommend to run a quick market research and check what other companies call the position. There are often also cultural difference between the US and EU when it comes to choosing job titles (e.g. Data Analyst / Business Intelligence Developer)

Clear language involves clarity, which may include: Job Title: Choose a clear and relevant title Task breakdown: Outline responsibilities with action verbs Skills clarity: Specify must-haves and nice-to-haves Technology: Mention tools and technologies Company details: Briefly describe the company's culture Application process: Clearly state the application process and the rounds of interviews Conciseness: Remove unnecessary repetitive words

Be direct and to the point. Don't be vague or use big, flowery words because HR told you to. The average person has the reading attention span of about 2 minutes due to reading small snippets of news on social media nowadays so heed this warning. Be sure to use the correct technical jargon, specifying versions of software, etc. and be sure to use action words and make the wording appealing with an urgent tone. Also, map out the possible career trajectory, possible training opportunities, interview process, describe the team this person would work with, and be clear if you require a particular degree or certain number of year's of experience in certain skills.

The third step involves using clear and concise language for easy comprehension. Avoid jargon, acronyms, and technical terms irrelevant to the role. Refrain from lengthy and complex sentences, opting for simple and direct wording to effectively convey your message. Utilize bullet points, headings, and white space to organize information, enhancing readability and scannability.

Focus on impact: Instead of listing routine tasks, emphasize the role's contribution to the bigger picture. How will the candidate's work make a difference? Use active voice and strong verbs: Paint a picture of what the candidate will do, not just what they'll be responsible for. Balance challenges and rewards: Highlight the exciting technical challenges and opportunities for learning and growth, while also mentioning any perks or benefits unique to your company.

Your call to action has to be crisp, clear and to the point to assure the candidate applies to the job if they are interested. Also reduce the rudimentary questions and focus on more approach driven questions to assure good quality output from the inputs received. Also show genuine enthusiasm to hire as this will help folks apply faster and build that trust for the role.

In addition to sharing the what and the why, being able to concisely share with the job seeker the recruitment journey will definitely raise one's level of interest in "clicking" the apply button. From sharing "how to apply" to "how many rounds of interviews", whom one will be meeting, and following the interviews whether there are any steps, i.e. background checks etc, allowing the job seeker to manage their job search process. Many a time, have I heard from candidates that they'll pivot their priority to one that can provide them clarity, as it allows them more control, especially when it's nearing bonus season months.

Clear call to action: Tell applicants exactly what to do next, whether it's submitting a resume or completing an online application. Provide relevant links: Include links to the company website, social media pages, or any additional information potential candidates might find helpful.

We recruiters often forget the proofreading step. After the job description draft is written (by either the hiring manager or the recruiter) and checked for typos, the best way to improve it is to give it to a team member - a person already employed in the position that's being advertised. They will easily identify what's missing, what's wrong and what's exaggerated in the description. It's in their best interest that the job in their team is advertised correctly! Another thing is using one of the proofreading tools that provide feedback on whether the JD is written using inclusive language. Automated tools - even AI powered - make mistakes too, so don't take their recommendations without a pinch of salt.

Proofread and edit: Ensure your ad is free of typos and grammatical errors. Target the right audience: Choose platforms where IT professionals are likely to see your ad. Track and analyze results: Monitor the response to your ad and adjust your approach as needed.

Es kann aber auch an der Art der Stellenbeschreibung liegen, dass nicht die wichtigsten Skills genannt werden oder keine attraktiven Benefits darin stehen.
