How can you write copy that resonates with a conservative audience?

In the world of copywriting, there's a golden rule we often overlook... Speak their language. Understand their values. This is especially true when addressing a conservative audience. Here, authenticity trumps creativity. Why? Because trust is paramount. Conservatives value tradition, respect for proven methods. They seek stability in an ever-changing world. So, how do we, as copywriters, connect with them? First, ditch the flashy jargon. The ‘revolutionary’ and ‘game-changing’ claims. (They see through that). Second, focus on reliability, quality, and heritage. These aren't just words. They're pillars of trust. REMEMBER: it's not about being trendy. It's about being timeless.

What I see is that it is just the same as if you were talking to another audience. Research their pains and desires and use controversy to your benefit. Let's say you are talking to extremely conservative people who are against LGBTQ+. You could go for something like this: “In 2023, they took the White House… President Biden, let them dishonor our ancestors by showing their naked bodies. Since the LGBTQ+ movement started, everything has become worse. Not only our currency is weaker, but living costs increased. We need to stop this in 2024… But we need your help. We require donations of a minimum of $9.97 to do our best to stop this. Donate now Will you change our future?”

Add Storytelling to which audiences can relate. Stories are the most powerful way to evoke audiences emotions because they resonates with their needs. Make sure stories are genuine. Keep your ultimate goal in mind as you’re not supposed to tell them stories but to convert them. Good luck!

Showing proof is key for ALL audiences, including conservative ones. Build associative authority through using partner and client brands. Build credibility through displaying association brands and credentials. Highlight case studies with testimonials from other conservative style clients. Use visuals that prompt trust - for conservative target markets it is best to use traditional visual triggers - things like shields, ticks etc. Where possible use quantification. You have worked on [x] number of projects, for [x] number of clients over [x] number of years. Numbers can really hit home.

Everyone has objections at the early stage of the customer journey. It's up to the marketing company / CMO to incorporate and dispel those objections through the marketing collateral and sales process. Here's one way. If the website is the prime marketing hub, have the home page take them through the journey of discovery. First show them the product and offer with a headline that builds credibility. Then show the range of what's on offer. Take them through client logos, partner logos. Have a section on the home page with testimonials. Include a launch section to recent case studies. Highlight benefit statements that indirectly address potential objections. Wherever you can, without be overt, deal with their fears and why you can solve them.

If it's a conservative audience, they definitely have a ton of objections and concerns. This is a time when you have to put yourself in their shoes and then write. It's hard to write to them if you don't understand their problems, objections and concerns from their perspective and their way of thinking.

It's harder to get them to act, but it's usually the right set of words that do the trick. Find the words that they will most likely act to and this set of words will help them take the desired action more easily.

If you read conservative websites and follow conservative thought leaders, you'll quickly see that there's tremendous debate and discussion over what the term "Conservative" even means today, and what it should mean as a philosophical perspective moving forward. Therefore, do you believe your product or service can make that person's life better? Do you care about making that happen? Then speak from your heart to theirs. That's what gives your writing power, not trying to word-sling buzzwords in the hopes of appealing to some definition or preconception that may well be meaningless. And if you're writing to promote a "Conservative" cause or service or product you don't resonate with or just think is flat out wrong, don't take the job.

Appeal to their values. Issue may vary by person but their core values will be quite similar. Also depends on the country and the degree or conservatism. Twitter will give you lots of issues, values and language to use for maximum impact.
