Depending on the scope of your project, you might need relationships with several NP's. A personal visit to invite them to a larger community meeting that helps them see the advantages of being involved with your project might be in order. To do this, you might need the assistance of locally elected public officials and other government agencies who have a stake in what you are and/or will be doing. This might add the juice you need to get people's attention. Higher-ups within the NP's and the larger community can inspire, encourage, and assign NP involvement.

In a collective impact project involving many NPs & cross-sector partners, we didn’t carve out time for this initially in our planning. I believe everyone assumed establishing goal alignment was where to begin & that by having common goals the rest would fall into place. At a certain point, we had to bring everyone together & have an external facilitator guide us through what we called a BAARRTT process to clearly spell out & agree to Boundaries of Authority/Accountability, Roles/Responsibilities, Time/Tasks. These were formatted into a table that was easier to reference and review than lengthy MOU legalese. However we all still signed off on it to formalize our agreement.

Yes I totally agree Mediation exercises could be the point of an agreement while having an dispute So here definitely need to be in a good space to display great resourceful information and or a tool for the organization and community

In my experience, taking time to identity strengths and needs of each partner (organizational and individual/teams) WITH each partner, within the context of the community’s assets/barriers. This process of co-discovery can be approached with authentic listening and other direct practice skills of engagement to build trust, foster understanding and empathy, and create a safe inclusive space for the work. In other words, this process itself when managed intentionally, can simultaneously accomplish strong connections and positive working relationships.

As always, when trying to help people, it is so important to rely on the expertise of organizations that are on the ground level. They know what will actually help without hurting the local community. Thant being said, not all organizations are providing spaces for communities to lift themselves up. I would make sure before, during, and after your partnership that you are looking critically at how the work is helping communities be more autonomous and self-sustaining. Throwing money and transient volunteers at problems is not usually the best solution, so look at the non-profits long term game plan and make sure they are working WITH their chosen community to help them out of their problems, not just doing FOR them.

How can you work with Community Organizers to improve nonprofits? Mission driven organizations’ impact is dependent on getting proximate to those they serve and no one is more proximate than community organizers.

I think it’s important to identify shared values that support the work and passion for the work. This is a helpful one for which to foster buy-in explicitly—experiential and academic knowledge are equally valuable and necessary.
