Ask to know what has been done, what is being done and what is to be done and how. This will help you know if the team members understand what is expected of them. Where they don't understand the expectation, you will have to explain it to them again. As often as you communicate with your team, you will discover the best format or channel to cascade informations to them and how best you can make your self available for their feedback to you.

Also, it is a good idea to keep in touch with your home base incase of technical matter or documents you would require, fo example a drawing or a manual.

Dedication, acceptance of failures and persistence, duly thinking, discussing alternatives, possible oversights minor details all add up to success. As a team listen to the youngest or least experienced he may be thinking out of box.

Once you have recognised what the problem is, then you can work through a process of elimination to determine the root cause of the problem. Starting with the simplest possible causes first. And your method of troubleshooting should be communicated well to all parties involved.

A good technique is to use the "5 Why" questions method to drill down to the root cause of the issue. This will provide clarity as to what has caused a failure to an equipment. When you have sufficient data, look at the trends to make informed decision and draw up a technical report so that these situations do not occur in the future and if they do, the solutions are available.

Here's a kicker. When I was working as a lead investigator, I was once asked to provide a statistics on how dangerous might be work performed without a permit (electrical, gas, etc.) I was so self evident for a requestor that an unpermitted work is also a very dangerous one. Data anaylis showed that quite the contrary. Unpermitted work was less dangerous. Because if a contractor is doing a job without a permit, he/she makes sure that this doesn't come out, so there is no fine or fee involved, so an extra effort goes to doing the job right. Not in every case, but in vast majority. Just an example of how common logic isn't always right.

The life of an engineer is a life of continues learning. The day you stop learning is the day you start dying. In the our present engineering practice, there are lots of innovations and modifications that one has to keep abreast with. Therefore develop the habit of continues learning as you practice your profession.

Lessons learnt document can provide insights to why certain things happened in a certian way, and this can be assesed to get it better for the next project. Asses with value engineering methods, if there was a situation that could have been done better the next time.
