How can you work with 3D graphics pros from diverse backgrounds?

In my perspective, possessing a background enriched with diverse skills and experiences holds greater utility than specializing in a singular skill set. Such diversity empowers individuals to navigate their desired career paths with heightened efficacy. The ability to supplement one's core expertise with additional knowledge facilitates the generation of innovative outputs, thereby reducing the reliance on external resources. This multifaceted approach not only enhances problem-solving capabilities but also fosters self-reliance, fostering a more self-sufficient and adaptable workforce.

One thing I’ve always said to myself is to be open minded especially when it comes to 3D graphics, you need to diversify and you could learn new things from different people The pros of this is you learn more about things you don’t know or things you thought you know

In my experience, teams that produce the most creative work are teams that have a variety of approaches to that work. When recruiting for my team, I actively look for designers that have different strengths. One may be ultra creative while another will lead technically. Another strength a designer can bring to the team is experience from another discipline or industry. I don’t want a team of clones.

I always liked working on computational geometry and linear mathematics in relation to 3D graphics (mostly 3D modelers). Its amazing seeing an algorithm doing its work in real time on 3D geometry. I like subdivision and other related algorithms and the fascination of how to translate what your are doing in a way that is visible even if you are hiding some hardware feature to make it easier for designers (ngons, quads, UVs).

All kind of skills work with art or design. Since your knowledge gives you perspective, you can even start modeling the tools you used in any background you had, since no one knows them better than you do. You have a story, just for the fact of being you, and it will result on knowledge and expression. Keep in mind that the knowledge and information to learn is out there, be resourceful, and start where you are with what you have.

Think about a message, use composition to express it, and think about your audience and about what you want to say with the things you are doing, give context so they can learn about your process.

English is universally accepted as the primary means of communication in a diverse environment. Therefore, it is the absolute minimum requirement for maintaining effective communication.

Communication is about restructuring you explanations to take in to account of a person’s experience and also their context. When I am explaining a new piece of software, I try to relate it to software they are already familiar with.

And if you were to be able to generate executable automated test cases from the designs in figma or others, then you are faster at being quality ready and accelerate getting to production. That's where it gets even more exciting!

Collaboration is key and using tools like figma (now with Vectary) can facilitate good discussions. Prototyping tools are essential and an approach to have the 3D artists lead the UI implementation and prototyping can provide instant feedback thereby reducing the design -implementation - test cycles. Using visual illustrations, click thru models, simulation and emulations also help in getting stake holder buy in early in the process

Give everyone an equal opportunity to contribute or present their ideas in a brainstorming session. This will make everyone feel appreciated.

It all depends on the project's goal. If everyone understands the goal, it wouldn't matter much, as everyone is working towards the same objective. Certainly, there will be bumps and rough roads ahead, but what kind of journey doesn't have those? Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that everyone comprehends the goal and that this goal remains their ultimate priority.
