Selling and networking are two completely different things. Most people do not understand what networking actually is. It is not “I do this for you and you do that in return.” Nope. -> Networking is reaching out to people that you can help. -> And do not expect anything in return. Did you ever try this? Trust me, this little shift in your mindset will go a long way.

While networking is important, I found that people try to sell to their network all the time. Selling is different from networking. Having an open and transparent attitude to creating value for people in your network, even when it comes to benefiting your employees, will always create value for you in return. BUT, the first and foremost reason to reach out should not be with the hidden agenda. People can see through this easily. And that can damage your relationship with the people in your network. Let them suggest how they can help in return. Do not ask for it. This kind of attitude, when it comes to networking, will transform your reach. Try it next time and see what happens.

I have a large "Network" of people which was built over 25 years in business as a founder. I am realising that out of this large number, 80% of people are there for self-interest. To sell their product or services. Networking does not work like this. I developed a sixth sense of fake networking. -> Offer value without expecting anything in return. - This mindset opens many doors. - Find people that you can help and just do it. - Build trust and genuine connection. Hidden agendas are like an open book. Most people can see it through. It will devalue your personal brand and damage your connections. Pick up the phone, reach out and just chat. With the attitude to add value. Simple.

Creating your content strategy as well as engagement strategy is equally if not more important. 80% of your time and effort should be engagement and 20% content creation. Yes, you read this right. Why? Because engaging your network is what matters. Commenting especially. -> Choose your network wisely. -> 40% peers and competitors -> 30% big creators to increase visibility -> 30% ideal clients This is a golden ratio. Once you leave a comment do not ghost. Leave 2-3 more comments on a same posts. And reply to people commenting on your comment. Do this and watch your network grow.

Networking is often misunderstood. Lots of people try to sell or use their network for their own benefits. While this is obvious that everyone should benefit, the WAY you go about this is what makes a difference. Reaching out and maintaining relationship with your network is important, of course. Nobody will argue with this. However, when reaching out, do this for the one reason only. To help and add value. Without expecting anything in return. People can see easily through the fake engagement. And that’s what damages relationships and your reputation. Building trust with your network is powerful. The best way to do this is to give and expect anything back. Try this for a month and see what happens.

Simply to Lead by example. Actively participate in networking events yourself and share your positive experiences with the team. When your team sees your enthusiasm, they are more likely to follow suit. Consistency, encouragement, and creating an environment that supports networking are essential to better encouraging your team to network effectively.

One of the best experiences of the power of network is on my first start up. My wife went Christmas shopping in Selfridges and asked me to go with her. I do not like big shops so I stayed in a pub just off Oxford St waiting for her. Across the table another guy, just like me. Waiting for his wife to finish shopping in Selfridges. We started chatting. Wife’s came back with big bags knocking few glasses off the table while squeezing through. Few rounds later we exchanged numbers and that was it. We stayed in touch. Couple of years later that same guy introduced me to someone who raised funding for us and enabled my start up to scale and exit to a market leader. Just like that, networking is powerful.
