You can also start out by asking your current network (here on LinkedIn) who they would suggest you talked to in order to gain knowledge and inspiration on sustainability opportunities. By asking this question from your individual position (everybody has one on LinkedIN :-) people would already start thinking in specific directions/contacts. See what comes up. Maybe it would broaden your thinking or send you in directions you haven thought of. Why: Too much or too specific goal orientation can sometimes hinder new opportunities....

Try and make how your contacts know what they know so you can orient yourself in the different methodologies at play in sustainability. Not all deserve equal praise or attention.

True networking occurs when there’s an understanding that everyone in the room has equal value. In its purest form, it’s about people enjoying other people, communicating passions and connecting with others who share those passions. It’s about listening, figuring out what others need and connecting them with people you think can help, without any designs for personal gain. The most successful networkers build genuine relationships and give more than they receive. They go beyond thinking, “What’s in it for me?” to ask “How can I help?”

Email connections asking to schedule a short informational interview about their experience. Prepare 5-6 questions about their work, advice, and recommendations of people or openings to explore. Ask if they're willing to make warm introductions to helpful contacts they know. Share that you have interest in sustainability opportunities and are exploring options. Thank them for their time and keep them updated on your progress.

Looking beyond your existing network can help meet new people who share your values and vision for sustainability. I have found joining different networking groups and also attending a specific course on sustainability have helped. I have recently joined the Green Advantage Skills Bootcamp in Sustainability at Aston University which has connected me with lots of new people who have an interest in sustainability but are not within my field.
