How can you use your fashion design skills to create a freelance career?

You need start up capital, in the interest of marketing even if its digital, so that you can reach your target market, the style of fashion depends on pop culture and what they value as top range products, with that research done, you should be able to communicate your brand story and product and the other 3 P's, in order to get your freelance, business off the ground, have a website and share regularly your designs and inspirations and ensure your brand marketing creates word of mouth which in turn creates consumer reconnaissance. your Design should be unique and your packaging must complement the product, be sure to use contracts and have specialized certificates for your products.

There are two main paths one could follow: 1. Market expert: one chooses to work in a specific market - womenswear, menswear, baby, kids, beachwear etc - and provide many different services for this market. 2. Service expert: one specializes in a service and provide it independently of the market. E.g. developing tech packs.

Start with an honest self-assessment of what you are good at (illustration, technical flats, pattern making, sample making) and only provide those services that you feel 90% confident you can perform at a professional standard.

It seems most designers have a specific set of experiences either from specialisation in Education or working in a specific design category, like women’s dress design, children’s wear, ready to wear or evening wear. I think it’s helpful to use your skills & specific expertise to select a niche.

Fashion freelancing isn’t just about designing but also, brand consultancy, social media management for fashion brands, fashion styling, blogging or content creation or even fashion PR. This is other than the conventional path of fashion illustrations, pattern making, print development, range planning, tech pack designing etc. So play your strengths wisely is what I’d suggest!??

- Choose 3-5 projects. - make it short but impactful —Show your range of skills across the projects, i.e. You don’t need to show every step on every project. Choose what to show on each project. - customize your portfolio for the projects you are applying for.

One thing I don't see mentioned enough is showcasing your work as someone who understands the importance of return on investment for any potential client, as most of them will be hiring a freelancer to either keep costs down or supplement a skill gap within their team

As a designer, you should be able to draw inspiration from objects around you and create unique designs that stand out. In today’s digital age, it’s an added benefit if a designer is well-versed in computer-aided design. A portfolio of your work is essential in showcasing your area of expertise. Leveraging your networks and using popular online platforms can help you find freelance design work. Set an optimal price for your work based on the kind of solution you are providing. Promote your work on social media and visit popular design and retail events to attract clients. Consistency is key in gaining traction.

The way you market yourself depends on the ideal client you want to attract and what those clients are looking for in hiring a freelance designer. Small companies usually have a more informal way of working compared to a more structured corporate client.

This is so true. I am a fashion designer who has not studied fashion at university. I have learned so many skills through self-study. I think these days all of us at least have a smartphone. So, use it. Take advantage of it. There are so many platforms for learning. For instance, I have watched so many YouTube videos to improve my skills in using Adobe Illustrator. Or my sewing and pattern-making skills. Explore and find the channels that you like and you are comfortable with. Creating a personal brand may help you come across as professional and recognizable. - name: use your name or an alias - color: choose your palette - logo: design an image or combination of text and symbols to represent your brand - typography - any other element that helps you create repetition and cohesiveness.
