How can you use your expertise to mentor emerging social impact professionals?

It really depends on the background of the mentees. Some may have professional experience. Some may wish to leverage social impact to demonstrate their work to stakeholders. It matters to know what the mentees want to achieve first.

Mentors have to understand the capabilities of the mentees and train them accordingly. Personal mentoring is the best form of mentoring while mentoring in the social impact field. The best way to make them learn is by letting them do the things and portraying himself/herself as an example of the good social impact practitioner .

In mentoring emerging social impact professionals, my focus lies in clearly defining goals. I emphasize specific impact areas like education, health, and environment, aiming to develop skills such as project management and fundraising. I offer flexibility with both one-on-one and group mentoring to provide personalized attention and shared learning experiences. Setting clear expectations on time commitments and communication channels is a priority. Crafting a compelling value proposition, I promote the mentorship opportunity to attract like-minded mentees. A structured mentoring plan ensures a supportive and growth-oriented environment.

My mentoring goals are to address specific areas of social impact and nurture skills in my mentees. I will identify and accept emerging social impact professionals who align with these goals as mentees. To establish a mentoring relationship, I will initiate meaningful conversations, understand mentees' aspirations, and set clear expectations. Additionally, I myself will stay updated on industry trends by lifelong learning approach and foster or initiate a supportive ecosystem to increase the chance of their success.

I am dedicated to empowering individuals to recognise the power of their voice in sparking impactful change. My focus is not to drain, but to fortify, fostering strength and resilience daily. I create environments where individuals can grow, learn, and thrive, ensuring workplaces and communities become spaces of fulfillment and accomplishment, not places where people leave worse off each day. Abusers and exploiters thrive in the shadows of anonymity, silence, and indifference, and hence a culture grows and solidifies. This needs to change. What we turn a blind eye to, today, becomes the burden of someone else tomorrow.

Im Gegensatz zum Coach, der methodisch arbeitet und selbst kein inhaltliches Wissen beisteuert, hat der Mentor eine thematischen Zugang zum Gegenstand, er gibt also selbst erworbenes Wissen – in der Regel Erfahrungswissen – weiter. Je enger die inhaltliche oder strukturelle Verwandtschaft der T?tigkeit des Mentess mit dem Erfahrungswissen des Mentors ist, desto fruchtbarer das Mentoring. Daneben gibt es Fragestellungen, die alle Social Entrepreneurs antreffen und die meist auch zentral sind: wie schaffe ich nachhaltige Wirkung? Wie baue ich eine stabile Organisation auf? Wie stelle ich eine langfristige Finanzierung sicher? Gerade in diesen Fragen ist ein Mentoring hilfreich.

Try to pair with a mentee that shares a similar background to you- such as being a parent, neurodiverse, a woman, or Hispanic. Many times people cannot get ahead due to systemic barriers, and if you have an understanding of this lived experience then you can better mentor someone with that background.

Discovering mentees in the realm of social impact can be gratifying, demanding a distinctive approach from conventional mentoring. Effective strategies include tapping into your current network—friends, social media, and colleagues—for referrals. Additionally, explore recommendations from diverse communities such as university circles, community events, conferences, and social enterprises. Crucially, clearly defining your ideal mentee facilitates meaningful connections. The process demands time, effort, patience, and persistence. By strategically navigating these avenues, you enhance your chances of finding mentees who align with your social impact goals.

Pour cela, les communautés de pratique sont très importantes. Elles permettent un échange d'information mais également d'opportunités entre pairs évoluant dans le même domaine. Je pratique un networking virtuel: je n'hésite pas à partager mes réalisations et à partager les réalisations de collègues. I have advocated for mentorship with my University Alumni for three years because of my previous experience with my current university. With my Treaty reserve, I have also advocated to build mentorship by way of revitalization- by creating a program specific to mentoring through the traditional nehiyaw identity using ceremony, that revitalizes nehiyaw citizen practices, such as a practice of "oskapew" which is a lifelong helper to community ceremonies and lodges. This form; of nehiyaw mentorship revitalizes and shapes nehiyaw and an inherent understanding of inherent cultural right to language, identity, culture and governance.

In mentoring emerging social impact professionals, establishing a robust relationship is key. Setting clear boundaries, expectations, and goals for sessions, along with defining communication frequency and format, builds trust. Actively listening to mentees, I focus on understanding their challenges and aspirations without imposing solutions. Encouraging them to find their own answers and learn from mistakes promotes independent growth. Providing constructive feedback, praise, and recognition contributes to their development, and celebrating achievements motivates progress. This approach creates a dynamic and supportive mentoring relationship, fostering the growth of emerging social impact professionals.

A mentoring relationship is different from classroom environment. It should be like a faculty imparting knowledge and also a senior friend sharing experience from his/her life. It's delicate and a fine balancing is required.

Recognizing that each individual learns and responds differently is crucial. Some may thrive under a hands-on, directive approach, while others benefit more from a facilitative style that encourages self-discovery and independent problem-solving. It's essential to gauge the level of guidance and support a mentee needs and adjust. Active listening plays a vital role in this adaptation process. By truly understanding a mentee's challenges and aspirations, a mentor can tailor their advice, feedback, and encouragement in a way that resonates most effectively with the mentee. Flexibility in mentoring approaches and empathetic listening foster an environment where mentees feel valued and understood for impactful learning and growth.

I am currently proposing a mentee program with First nations from Treaty Six students from Treaty Six who would like to participate at summer archaeological digs: both on a reserve and at an archaeological site away from a reserve in Treaty Six. Most programs do not accommodate opportunities for First Nations from Treaty Six because of cost, and because this is a new opportunity in 2023. By being community and or treaty or most importantly nehiyaw or Indigenous-oriented provides tools that include ceremonies, feasts, or prayers to shape mentee understanding and appreciation.

Two key principles guide my mentoring approach: Health Transparency: Openly addressing mental and physical health challenges not only aids personal well-being, but in my personal experience, also unlocks doors to impactful initiatives with organizations like the United Nations and World Health Organization. Business-Minded Approach: Instilling a business mindset ensures sustainability and success in social impact. Prioritizing financial infrastructure and operational efficiency led our charity MUN conference, IEUMUN, to become Europe's largest within a few years.

Evaluating mentoring impact is crucial for continuous improvement. Utilizing diverse methods like surveys, interviews, testimonials, and case studies allows for comprehensive feedback collection. Tracking mentees' progress, achievements, and learnings provides tangible evidence of the impact. This evaluation not only helps identify my strengths and areas for improvement as a mentor but also contributes to refining mentoring skills and practices. Additionally, showcasing mentoring success stories becomes a powerful tool to attract more mentees in the future. By systematically assessing the impact on both mentees and myself, I ensure the effectiveness and relevance of my mentorship in the dynamic field of social impact.

As a mentor, always share where you made decisions based on values. Discuss the ethical considerations and principles that guided your decision-making and how your values were aligned - especially social responsibility, ethics, and integrity. Emphasize the need for continuous learning in the ever-evolving field of social impact and share how you stay informed about industry trends. Connect continuous learning with values that emphasize growth, adaptability, and a commitment to staying informed for greater impact. Finally, model empathetic leadership by sharing how prioritizing the well-being and dignity of individuals and communities aligns with compassionate leadership to commit to social justice.
