How can you use your creativity to contribute to a team project?

In a project to reduce our company's carbon footprint, clarity on goals was key. My creative solution? A gamified app to encourage sustainable behaviors. Before building it, we brainstormed and prototyped, aligning the idea with our resources and objectives. As the deadline neared, storytelling kept the team engaged, sharing beta-tester successes for real-time improvements. The outcome? We surpassed our emission reduction goals, and the app is now company-wide. Creativity, well-aligned with team objectives and communicated effectively, led to exceptional results.

First n foremost requirements. Do brain storming, consult / ask doubts, propose and listen n evaluate everything with a cool mind.

Understanding the problem clearly is half the job done. Knowing what why who where when and how of the subject clarifies every communication and helps developing baselines for all stakeholders by simplifying and streamlining the project information.

When working on a group project that requires innovation, I take several approaches to achieve satisfactory results. First, explain and define the goal and make sure everyone is on the same page. Then, we brainstorm outside the office, asking key questions about desired results and how to achieve them. We encourage everyone to freely contribute ideas and involve all relevant stakeholders. What is important at this stage is not to ignore any idea or be ashamed to offer any opinion. For instance, in a project to enhance access to a cultural center, we included reception staff and conducted visitor surveys. This led to an innovative solution, reducing wait times, cutting costs, increasing revenue, and enhancing visitor satisfaction.

One of the best strategies to effective brainstorming is to use the 6 thinking Hats technique. This is an efficient way to run trough ideas and find the perfect fit. Blue: Start with the approach and process White: Review the facts Green: Generate new ideas without judgement ( very important ) Yellow: Focus on the benefits Red: Consider emotional responses to any ideas Black: Apply critical thinking after the benefits have been explored to test the viability of the new ideas

Sometimes your best ideas appear away from a traditional work setting. If only I could count the times I’ve gotten inspiration while showering, dreaming, biking, looking out my window… Truly allow yourself to be receptive to all ideas and you can always fine tune it after you have some groundwork to build off of.

Working with a team always helps me see other people's perspectives. They often see what I don't and their suggestions help me generate new ideas or build solutions based on their feedback.

Since no one can foresee the future, it is best to try an approach to a problem and see how it goes. This is not to say that a multi-disciplinary team should not come up with a solution but that a high paced environment demands for a lean agile organization who is not afraid to make mistakes and ammend. Some people like to be acknowledged for their creativity privately, while others thrive on public acknowledgement. Understanding just how your team likes to receive recognition goes a long way in ensuring that everyone feels appreciated and are likely to continue contributing their creative ideas in the long term.

Brainstorming sessions speak to my soul! I cannot emphasize how many great ideas have come from listening to others discuss what’s working for them and what they’re struggling with. Usually, someone on the team has a skill or a connection that bridges the gap between where your team is and where they want to go. If you haven’t had the chance to do so recently, I suggest mapping out at least an hour with a small group and see how it goes.

It is important to always show appreciation to your team for their efforts and constantly remind them that you as a leader, will always be available to help them grow.

It is also important to note that creativity is not limited to recreational fields but can manifest in various forms. Creativity enables professionals to adapt to changing circumstances, overcome challenges, and better serve the needs of individuals , businesses and society

I think you just need to be able to go into a project with an open mind and give yourself space to allow yourself to adapt in a natural way to how the situation unfolds. This is where you can allow yourself to improvise as the situation evolves, as it is. If you go in with too fixed an idea of how it will be, with a preset mind towards the contribution you'll make, you are holding back the element of creativity by undermining your own ability to adapt. People fail to adapt when they refuse to give up the sense of control, and even if you think your thoughts controls the situation, they don't. Accepting this is simply a mark of maturity. Adaptation is a very important skill in any context, and that is the key to creativity, I think.

You have to sell your creativity to the team. This approach is good for a near end-stage creativity. Consider your team as a customer and explain different aspects of your creativity to them to understand it, accept it, and add some point to it, like selling a solution to a customer.

Creativity is not an end on itself, and there are no shortcuts to achieve a full creative potential within collaborators. Is valid to mention, however, that having a diverse and safe working space is the perfect ecosystem to foster creative teamwork. Make DEI a key element of your business DNI and the results will surprise you.

From my experience the more you are able to let go of the different roles and hats each individual plays especially when it comes to positions within the organization.. and create a safe space for everyone to share and speak up with no judgment or right or wrong answers, the more innovative and creative ideas come of out of the session.
