The biggest challenge in current time on using VR for research communications include the required infrastructure and operating cost of it. Another challenge could be accessibility to infrastructure, devices, etc. From the user perspective, the challenge lies in the area of psychology and behavioral aspects as many people don't find comfortable to use, operate and work with various VR technology & devices.

As I am teaching HSE courses, I believe that using VR will be very helpful for my students. The VR can make learning more exciting and realistic. It lets students practice safety skills in a safe, virtual world. However, starting with VR can be costly because you need special equipment and software. Also, making the lessons for VR takes a lot of work and some learners might feel sick from using it. Despite these challenges, VR can be a great way to teach HSE because it allows students to learn by doing, which can help them remember better. When planning to use VR, it's a good idea to begin with a small project, make sure students know how to use VR, and keep improving the lessons based on their feedback.
Like many others, my first thoughts went to data visualization but then I also remembered a recent article in this space about teaching complex subjects. An explorable VR space could spatially break down complex research into virtual exploration stations. It also brings to mind how the expertise of Museum Sciences as a discipline could be leveraged here: both the VR being used in that field but also the principles of conveying information and engaging patrons in an experience, etc., that have been a part of museums since long before VR. [Not a museum sciences guy, BTW.]
