How can you use user research to create a user-friendly interface?

First focus on why do you need user research. Are you not familiar with the trends of the industry? There are 2 types of user research scenarios. One is where you have the interface to test, this can be done by A/B testing or thinking aloud method, depending upon the situation. The other is where we are trying to understand how users behave, what they do, why they do it and what are their motivations. This will help you in creating a user research framework. If your secondary research can point towards certain patterns, try those out first. The biggest challenge is to keep your questionnaires or interview methods, unbiased.

Before planning research based on a list of objectives and goals, we should prioritize understanding the research environment. This environment should closely replicate the real user scenario. For instance, if we're testing a product meant for on-the-go, having candidates sit in a lab for an hour may not yield the most accurate feedback, aside from identifying obvious design or product issues. In the lab, candidates won't be distracted by passersby, traffic, or noise typical of the real environment. They might spend 20 minutes examining the product instead of giving it a mere 5-second glance.

Understand your target users. Create user personas and segment them to tailor your research to the right audience. Develop a detailed plan that outlines your research timeline, resources needed and responsibilities. Collect data according to your plan. Ensure consistency and objectivity in your methods.

A great example of how to create an effective user research plan is to be aware of the business's priorities for upcoming initiatives and align the strategy with operational needs. Once you have this insight, you can proactively shape your research plan by carefully selecting the appropriate methods and approaches to address the primary questions and hypotheses. As a result, you will gain more confidence in ensuring that the tools also align with your specific scenario and schedule.

Sharing my hands-on experience for this one. To lanuch and manage a sucessful product, your overall Product Team "must" have "actual users" as key stakeholders (not the Directors or VPs or above) - but those who will login to your product and use it to deliver value on daily basis. Schedule regular debrief sessions with them summarizing your overarching PI planning, Sprint planning (or scope planning, if you are on waterfall). These focussed sessions will help you to connect/engage and collect invaluable feedback from the real end-user perspective. Many a times, entering the meeting room, you will find yourself informing them that their input from last session is being deployed with current Sprint - take a min to enjoy those beaming faces!

Wow! That's such a challenging thing to do. But I love it, not only because it's a nice path to dig deep in user journeys and your daily basis schedule, but because we have a great opportunity to create our user base, and most importantly, keep these users loyal enough to be part of every new experiment, validation or research activity. Usually it is quite challenging to reccruit, always consider time and resources and judicially make desicions on choosing the candidates for the research, also given the severity choose the type of user accordingly i.e. for smaller resources try to incorporate the key users having the majority of consideration, only cosider edge cases when you have time and resources to address that.

Turn participant recruitment into a treasure hunt. Your goal: find individuals embodying your target audience’s essence. If developing a fitness app, seek varying fitness levels, ages, and routines. Scour diverse sources—current users for experienced perspectives and referrals for trusted participants. Evaluate your sample size and diversity like choosing your treasure map; broader studies may need larger groups. Incentives are your treasure, enticing enough to motivate participation yet fitting your budget. A method like surveys might require smaller incentives, while in-depth interviews necessitate more valuable treasures. This approach ensures a rich, representative participant pool, turning recruitment into an exciting adventure.

Select appropriate research methods, such as interviews, surveys, usability testing or analytics analysis, based on your objectives. Create research protocols that outline the research process, including interview or testing scripts, survey questions and data collection procedures. As previously discussed, recruit participants based on predefined profiles. In usability testing, provide clear tasks for participants to complete while observing their interactions with the interface. Take notes, record sessions and gather feedback. When conducting surveys or interviews, prepare open-ended questions to gather qualitative insights. Encourage participants to share their thoughts and experiences.

When we are dealing with people, we never have enough confidence in how things will happen. But you are not alone, all of us have the same problem…Don't waste your suffering, just accept and make sure you have a plan B. I know you have a deadline, but guess what? Your user can just don't appear. Yeah, when the whole work is done, is nice to analyze the compiled data. It's nice and you can get an advantage from this if all your stakeholders, team members, and cross areas learn from this data. Once my team was working for a shipping platform and was impressed by how the business areas held the data for decision making. What I wanna say with this is simple: let them use it, let them learn from it, and create new assumptions and hypotheses collaboratively to iterate in the research data.

Jacob Nielsen was a genius saying that when I first read this quote I found myself reflecting on a lot of companies that I had worked with, struggling with customer priorities and stakeholder expectations, without simply observing and learning from users and customer experience. Once we have the data and we know the critical journeys we can make a script that allows us to validate or invalidate the main hypothesis and make better decisions.

The question is more on how to use UXR and not the steps/process, the sections seem process oriented. Due to 750 char limit, I am posting a concise take. IMO, you can use any of the many UXR techniques to collect, analyse, synthesise, solutionize, validate, refine and deploy the final user friendly interface. The key here is to bring in an "outside-in" lens, overlay findings to the actual business requirement(s) and then explore possible-plausible pathways. An org's propensity to embrace, invest and apply UXR is key here, else most of the interfaces would be churned out by committees with siloed (and disparate) interests. Don't ask "how", figure out "what" needs to be done to make UXR a mandatory pillar within the org's design playbook.
