In the engineering field of Power Deliver, we use tuned mass damper's(TMD's) on power delivery structures to mitigate the effects of resonant frequency vibrations and amplitude spikes due to aeolian loadings associated with vortex shedding. The goal is to calculate tuned masses that respond most effectively to excitation wind speeds matching resonance of the structure. Vortex shedding plays a big part in these calculations. We use various software's to model these structures and respective dynamic loadings when predicting modes of failure. We consider mass participation factors based on these likely modes when calculating optimal tuned masses to respond and dampen the effects of aeolian frequency vibrations associated with vortex shedding.

TMDs are used to control vibrations induced by wind. The building oscillation under wind is predominantly due to the cross wind response caused by vortex shedding. And because this causes primary mode response, TMDs can work effectively against them. TMDs however are ineffective during seismic excitation contrary to popular belief. Because under seismic excitation the building responds at multiple frequencies and the accelerations are usually extremely violent, making the TMDs ineffective. TMDs are usually designed to be locked in place in such excitation and they should not be relied on for seismic damping.
