How can you use training to develop technical skills?

1. Understand the Landscape - Recognize that technical skills go beyond coding. Identify relevant skills based on your field or career. 2. Choose the Right Training Methods - Formal education (degrees, certifications). Online courses and workshops. On-the-job learning. In-app guidance. 3. Interactive Workshops and Demonstrations - Participate in hands-on workshops. Collaborate with peers. 4. Continuous Learning - Stay updated through blogs, conferences, and self-study. Apply skills in real-world scenarios. Remember, technical skills require consistent effort and adaptability. Combine them with strong soft skills for a well-rounded profile.

Choosing the right training method is essential! For instance, no one learns how to swim by watching videos, right? In the same way that no one learns hedging techniques by playing in Excel! The above illustrates the key elements you need to consider to choose the right method - I recommend that you follow the approach outlined below: 1. What is the skill(s) that you are trying to develop? 2. What is the most effective way to learn it? 3. From the options above, what method suits you (your time availability, your budget, your learning preference, etc.) better? Once you know all of the above, you can look for the option(s) that you have identified that suits you best and choose from the alternatives available.

By choosing the right training methods based on the training need assessments for different levels. That requires the level of complexity and resources/timeliness alongside with the just in time training feedback.

Choosing the right training method is essential. Yes, there's plenty of free stuff online avaliable that you can gorge on to your hearts content... But where the learning really happens is when you actually practice! Do you need certifications, what's your budget, do you learn better in a classroom type environment? Getting feedback is vital when learning so that anchor your learnings. Make connections with peers. Have a beginner mindset, be curious and make learning a lifelong process. It will keep you young ?? Above all enjoy the process!

From my perspective, i will add the current skill level and background of the learners, i will leverage technology to hyper personalise the learning style and capability requirements of the role to optimise the return on investment

There is a very peculiar thing about Technical Skills. Unless you are going to implement these immediately in your area of work, the training won't prove fruitful. Training for technical skills should be a combination of Theory (class room / online training) + Practical (Implementation in actual). There must be a good blend of both the above methods. The most important aspect is a evaluation of the trainee even after the actual training is over and the Trainee has started implementation.

To add, getting clear on how success will look like will shape the training content and approach. A question to consider is, if we are saying yes to this, what are we saying no to?

By prioritizing these elements, you can cultivate an environment conducive to exploration, experimentation, and skill development.

Questions to reflect on for me are: What does a supportive learning environment means? What does it look like, elements or characteristics? What constraints or resources does the organization have that impact the learning environment?

Applying and practicing your skills is where the magic really happens. While we learn technical skills in theory it's once you start applying in them in real or simulated situations do you really consolidate your learning, test your understanding, and improve your performance. The real mastery of a skill comes around after spending hours utilising that skill and testing in real life situations. Keep practicing those skills!

Reviewing and reflecting on learnings, process and outcomes is a brilliant way to continuous learning and refinement of your skills. Using journals to reflect and document your learnings, achievements and insights is a powerful method. Coaching relationships will help provide feedback and enhance your own reflective learning.

Training works best when the learning process itself is valued, not just immediate proficiency gains. You can measure progress through small insights that accumulate over time and trust that embracing mistakes and questioning assumptions leads to greater command than a false sense of confidence.

Keeping updated on your skills is easier now than ever. It doesn't always mean going back to school, although in some technical trainings it's a wise decision to keep up to date! There are a plenty of refresher courses, that don't cost an arm and leg that can get you back up to speed. Keep abreast of the latest trends in your field and join professional networks or communities of practice.

Organisations need to have clear policies and processes in place to help enable those employees who wish to grow and diversify their skill set. Having relevant L&D programs for employees and access to in-house live projects to put these skills to use during the initial phase of learning, can further instil confidence in employees and bring value to the organisation. Having a mentor, coach or a buddy who has been on this path in the organisation, can further embolden the learning and growth curve for the employee leading to a win-win for everyone.
