A SWOT analysis is a great, simple, structured tool to summarise a variety of insights you have gleaned around your subject matter. While it is a simple concept, I see time and again it being misunderstood of its power and also applied with honesty that the insight has drawn. Sometimes, the messages in the SWOT, especially the S&W, need better received by senior leaders and, therefore, can misjudge what needs to happen next. A variation to the SWOT is the OTSW, which emphasises the external view first before coming back internally. It is interesting how this small change can impact your perspective.

Data gathering and insights are critical to building a relevant SWOT, with other frameworks being utilised to focus on different aspects such as "Customers" or "Competitors". I've observed where insights are added to the "S" like "Reputation" for example, but there is no evidence that the target market knows this or indeed is relevant to them. So we need to ensure "Relevant" and "Realised", or we place it in the "W" to build on. The O&T sometimes refer to future states so before adding to the framework we can use the ranking of "Likelihood of happening" and "Likely Impact" to help us prioritise. When we have built, we need to step back and critique as an honest representation of our insights as this will then direct our focus.

The output of the SWOT provides a powerful focus for any application, such as for Peer Groups, and if done well, can give the 2 or 3 elements that really will make the change required if supported. Another aspect relates to the "doing" of the framework, which brings the team together with a purpose and a shared sense of ownership and the common language, which in itself is helpful for teams to recalibrate now and again.

Sometimes listed in "W" are insights that senior management will not want to hear and are sometimes removed. Being open and honest about what the data and insights say is necessary to ensure the fullest picture is painted to help decide where to focus. Many conflicting data or opinions can also create challenges, and a well-facilitated group discussion will aid this.
