How can you use storytelling to inspire the next generation of media professionals?

Craft compelling stories to inspire the next media generation. Start with a clear purpose guiding content choices—genres, formats, and styles. Whether informing, entertaining, or persuading, align your purpose with personal values, passions, and a visionary media producer's perspective.

I would first ask the question - to what extent will AI allow a "next generation" of media practitioners. And I would need to look back some thirty years, when having graduated with a solid Radio & Television Arts degree from one of the best universities in Toronto, 20 years on, these degrees were described as obsolete. Fast forward to today. More questions. How are we tooling our media practitioners in the Caribbean to stand up and be counted? I sense a disappearance of the loyalty that helped to create a sound media practitioner. Today everyone moves from one media house to the next, always searching. The tenacity that existed in creating perfection for the media has shifted. I can't yet see the media practitioner of tomorrow.

Authenticity is the key going forward. The backlash on fake imaging and hyper-staged images of 'real-life' is producing more raw and meaningful content. Keep circling back to real is my advice.

Find inspiration from life, not just other creations. Your genuine worldview surfaces with dedicated originality. Embrace the world in shades of grey and vibrant colors. Choose a compelling story that moves and compels you to write. Your sole mission is to do justice to the narrative. Dedication and honesty resonate subconsciously with your audience. In this intricate dance of storytelling, your authenticity will be felt beyond conscious awareness. Remember, people observe more than you can imagine.

Inspire the next media generation through targeted storytelling. Place your audience at the core—research, plan, produce, and distribute with their needs, preferences, and habits in mind. Adapt formats for tech-savvy youth or traditional consumers. Audience-centric storytelling is key.

Authenticity is key to developing a strong voice - I’ve witnessed people getting viral, when their strong emotions (usually negative) took control over the flow of their prepared speech. Something makes you furious/dissapointed and you are inspired to let everyone know, to act and change it? That’s your voice! People tend to rally around those in whom they have faith; when we're energized by passionate emotions, we tend to be more focused and driven. Convincing them (audience) is the first step to finding your true passion.

Set yourself apart through personality, experiences, and perspective. Shape your tone, style, and language. Experiment, express emotions, and find your niche. A unique voice elevates your stories, making them memorable and impactful.

As a science media consultant, I regularly think about existing voices in the field. What could be a fresh, distinctive voice or perspective to convey the message? Who's the intended audience, and does the chosen voice align with them? Is the voice natural and suitable for us to adopt comfortably?

Investigate how stories work and why #HumanVoices are so good at it. There are plenty of good podcasts out there like Katie Flamman's "Storytelling For Business" Podcast. Find out how and why stories work and how you can leverage skills you already have to help others find out more about you and buy from you. It takes practice and patience, but it's worth it!

Selecting a genre you feel most comfortable with and utilizing the skills you have to create storylines, will create a buzz for broad ranges of audiences. Constructive criticism gives you chances to reevaluate your work, it gives you the opportunity to collaborate with professionals which will possibly generate even more opportunities, to become successful in this industry.

Learn tools, embrace technology, and understand storytelling principles. Hone skills in writing, directing, producing, and editing. Seek feedback and collaboration. Continuous improvement ensures compelling and impactful storytelling.

The growth of social media in the past decade has made launching, tracking, and improving content sharing much easier. Tools such as TikTok can help you share your story with millions if you adapt to the current trends; on the other hand, Instagram has developed integrations such as Reels and Instagram Stories that allow for faster engagement in comparison to posts. Using social media as a resource to share your stories could be extremely beneficial!

Utilize diverse channels—websites, blogs, podcasts, social media. Engage with your audience, seek feedback, and measure impact. Building reputation and network, sharing stories is key to evolving as a successful media producer.

Share your story, not a variation of one that already exists. I think originality and authenticity is naturally inspiring. Don't be afraid to be yourself by telling the stories that consume your thoughts. Stan Lee's Spider-Man was denied early on... Imagine if he followed their advice and wrote about something more common at the time.

As a science media consultant i work with a lot of numbers, data, and logic. But I truly believe that you move your audience with the heart. It's not about drowning in spreadsheets or reports; it's about infusing your work with passion, creativity, and dedication. Every piece has a personal story, and the real thrill of working in this industry lies in unearthing, refining, and presenting it.

Make stories that challenge the viewer, that make the viewer try to solve, add mystery and purpose to it and to digest it slowly so as to get the full effect of brilliant storytelling, to surprise and stun.

Living through real life experiences and using a unique and creative imagination, will pull your audience in. Being passionate when talking about your stories, will inspire your audience to make them want to see your stories.

Inspire the next generation by learning more in the field, keeping up to date to the trending techniques, asking for feedback and sharing real interesting stories where they can learn from you. Adding value to the audience is the key to make inspiring storytelling content.

If someone needs a story to influence our future media professionals, Tell them to go find another trade. Your own lives story is your inspiration. You need no other story. So many in media are not real media professionals. Music being copied, tv series imitating, outright lack of creativity and I often see excuses instead of inspiration. There are stories all around us, if someone needs one, they are blind. Blinded eyes do not make good media visions!
