How can you use storytelling and emotional intelligence to network in live events?

One tip I found valuable aside from empathy is to be honest, own our mistakes, pause before reacting and especially lift people up.

People love stories! And nothing gets stuck in the mind of your audience and help you deliver a powerful message like a good story. ????♀? Here's how you can do it: 1- Define Your Goal: Whether it's inspiring action or conveying a specific message, having a clear goal will guide your narrative. 2- Consider Event Context: Tailor your story to fit the event's theme and purpose. 3- Know Your Audience: Understand your audience's interests and experiences. Craft your story to resonate with them. 4- Adapt Your Tone: Keep your tone personal, relatable, and concise.

Storytelling and emotional intelligence are powerful tools that can transform your networking experiences and the connections you make. Here are my tips on how you can use them: 1. Craft a compelling personal narrative, an engaging story about your background, your role and your passions. This makes you more relatable and memorable. 2. Incorporate Stories into conversations to illustrate points or share experiences. 3. Listen for stories and encourage others to share as this can create a deeper connection and provide insights into their interests and challenges.

It should be personal and relatable to the topic and the audience. People look for authenticity and something to naturally relate with.

I find authentic engagement through storytelling, attentive listening, and relatable experiences will cultivate deeper connections in any kind of settings. I'd share either professional and/or personal anecdotes that may resonate with the event's theme or panel discussion to establish genuine interest and rapport with my audience of one or a hundred.

Beside social skills I found the NON-verbal communication such as Body Language, Poses, and tone of voice very effective tool to get to my users more effectively.

Emotions are complex and can make or break a relationship especially when collaborating. Showing emotion is not a bad thing but not being able to control your emotions can be. For example, if you are a generally happy go lucky person but today the team or a person is not performing, it’s ok to show dissatisfaction but with empathy. It really becomes an advantage as the team or person realizes this is a serious matter and not an every day type of thing. All-in-all remember, everyone makes mistakes, has bad days or even moments. Empathize, discuss and build from that.

To level up my self-awareness skills, I incorporate daily routines of journaling, mindfulness meditation, and yoga to discover and work with any emotions that come up during each practice. It's surprising what comes up or opens up while you're scribbling down your thoughts or stretching out in a pigeon pose. Techniques like deep breathing or meditation aid in self-regulation, empowering me to navigate impulses and emotions effectively, especially when my toddler is having big feelings.

In a different life many years ago, I was a screenwriter and sold projects into the studio system at one point. What I learnt in my later networking journey really came from the years as a struggling storyteller. And it is simple. For somebody who speaks quite a lot it’s a difficult thing to do however, simply listen when networking and find a way to have a profound interest in the person you are networking with: this is probably the best thing you can do. In all stories, there are usually three acts. So here - act one is to prepare; two is to profoundly listen, and act three is to ensure that you follow up in a meaningful way with a recollection from their own journey. That and a firm handshake!??

Always assume that your audience are smart, sophisticated and extremely knowledgeable. do not fake your reactions and stage your replies as if you are reading a script. always be genuine and to the point

I'd go a step further to not only research my audience and the event theme but also practice crafting concise and impactful stories that align with my objectives. Bonus, if you can brainstorm open-ended questions that can initiate meaningful conversations and demonstrate genuine interest in others' experiences.

Authenticity is the most important. If you are sincere in life, you will also be sincere in arts. Being able to transpose a real story, comes with honesty, humility and generosity. Already having this level in your heart, there will be empathy in the others people hearts.

This practice allows you to understand and manage your emotions and those of others effectively. This skill is crucial in networking, as it enables you to navigate social interactions with empathy and awareness.

Plus, it might even help you navigate any unexpected challenging questions or ideas with greater ease. Striking the right balance between being authentic and professional can be challenging, but being genuine is key to building trust.

Fright of being criticised is real. If you have the courage to show yourself, you will become a recognised brand. People will always show respect for those ones who have the courage to be as they really are.

I used to run a small business with my friend Sarah who is a very well established TV producer. We ran master classes on how to develop your skills as a professional communicator, particularly when it comes to communicating for TV or video. Our workshops were always busy, and we had the honour of coaching with experts like voice experts and well-known TV stars at the time in the UK. There are plenty of tips and tricks, but one of the best things you can do is to simply do it! Speaking to a camera or an audience is quite similar and it does require practice, and the best practice is getting out there, and finding small opportunities to communicate, especially on stage, and if you’re in business, then networking events are a no brainer.

Always read the audience. Always. No matter how good your story/stories have done in past situations, context is what makes communication through story relevant. A story is in its’ nature something that evolves. Myths are recycled and reformed, but the essence survives and thrives. Consider this when telling your own stories, and strive to obtain myth status.

Just dare to fail and accept it with peace, before having the performance. Repeat it, over and over again. You will become stronger and you will take failure as a normal life experience.

I may have a different perspective than many other educated opinions on “preparing stories for an event”. I find in my own journey in life that “canned stories” lack authenticity and thus are more propaganda than real communication. The communicators I learn from and respect the most, practice the act and art or story telling, not necessarily the exact story. This way you can pivot and pull out a more appropriate emotional communication skill or story that fits the crowd and the moment instead of just hitting the memory autopilot and hoping for your desired outcome!
