In projects that are pressed for deadline, there is the temptation is to skip developing either the storyboard or the animatic during pre-production and rushing to the rough cut. But that is a huge mistake, and can be a costly one. It often impedes the rest of the process, meaning the small amount of time you saved by skipping over your animatic disappears when you realize that the timing of your rough cut is off and obscuring your message. Going backwards in a production pipeline is extremely labor intensive and can have a major impact on your project’s budget, so remember that every step of pre-production is there for a reason!

You are looking to plot out the key action, the major movements, to get a sense of a whole. Don’t go too granular too fast, or you’ll lose your way. Not every movement of a character needs to be drawn, just a sense of what they do in the scene. Remember to think big picture, looking for the main story beats first. More detail can always be added later. When it comes to creating the animatic Even if your final audio isn’t ready, use a scratch track, it doesn’t even need to be a voice actor. You just need to have something to base your timing off of.

Internal use storyboards are generally pretty rough and ready. It doesn’t have to have color, or well designed characters- it needs to convey the basics to your team. These early kinda of storyboards and animatics are fast to produce, and cheaper in terms of labor- so they’re usually only show to your team to be evaluated for further development. Storyboards and animatics that are shown to clients or test groups need to be developed at a much higher quality, usually by a seasoned storyboard artist, and are fully art directed.
