How can you use story points for effective time management?

Story Points, as we know helps teams size the piece of work. It is often misunderstood to help us identify how many days/time will a user story take to complete. Story Points is not an effective way of estimation, instead is a very effective way of Value slicing a piece of work. SP should be used to engage the teams into meaningful discussions on how *complex* a user story is and moreover a SP should then help teams decide whether that user story can be delivered within a sprint or not. An effective and efficient scrum team would want to deliver every sprint and SP can only help in establishing if that piece of work is achievable within a sprint based on its COMPLEXITY/Risks/Dependencies and NOT TIME. Think about this.

Story points are actually pretty good in time management. Story points can be indirectly helpful to how much time will take you to complete the task and as it divides task into smaller parts , more clarity comes for user story & accurately you can set timeline & complete the task.

If it is a 1x1x1 ft wood box, the team might choose a story point less than 2.

The question itself is wrong. Story points are one of the massively mis-used practices in the Agile Industry in the name of productivity. When you attach time to the story point, you manipulate the intention behind the sp. If complexity can be linearly associated with time, then it's not complex.

As per agile definition you can't associate story point with time. If you do so then its time for you to upskill or change your scrum master.

There is no recommended story points to hours template and also not a good idea to equate story points to hours/time. Because a story point might take more or less hours based on effort, complexity, risk and unknowns that every story has.
