How can you use social media to stay connected with remote teams?

The choice of a social media platform for remote teams should be a strategic decision. It must reflect the balance between professional collaboration and the human need for connection and community. Platforms that encourage open, informal interactions are crucial. Networks like Slack, Discord, or Microsoft Teams offer spaces not just for work-related discussions but also for casual conversations and personal connections. If purely focusing on task management and progress updates, platforms like Asana or Trello might be more appropriate. These streamline workflow and keep team members aligned on projects, but they don’t necessarily nurture the same level of personal interaction and community feeling.

When you work on remote mode you need to stay connect with your team or the people you give a service. Not always will be easy, but when you find the correct platform the work runs efficiently. Also, you have to be care about the information you share, so, it is important to select de perfect social media channel to be stay connected and to have the security that the data is protected.

As Operations Director for the Live and Let Live Foundation and Global Peace Movement, we use a variety of platforms depending on the type of engagement necessary, from team meetings with staff & volunteers from around the globe to marketing our message and inviting participation in our roundtable discussions to working with Program Hosts for our social enterprise component that brings prosperity into the freedom and peace mix.

One thing I’ve found helpful is being strategic with the social media platforms you choose. LinkedIn is good for professionals and allows you to share information about your company or industry as well as connect with your peers and customers to stay up to date on relevant topics.

Set up dedicated channels or groups for specific teams, projects, or topics. This helps streamline communication and keeps discussions organized.

Our Live and Let Live team spent copious hours working on our Corporate Style Guide; essential to make sure messages and consistent with our mission and vision as well as our voice and tone. The Style Guide then can be applied to developing a Communications Plan and creating the messaging for the various platforms and target populations. We just had 18 volunteers participate in a round of exercises and production of materials that were all coordinated through our Leadership Team. The results were absolutely phenomenal and our use of a panoply of platforms will soon example the preparations we've had for the last year or so.

Craft a plan for what and how often you'll post on social media to keep your remote team connected. Mix in updates, achievements, and interesting tidbits. Having a strategy keeps your social media engagement focused and valuable for the team.

Each of our marketing messages includes specific hashtages and mentions to draw attention and engagement through likes, follows, shares and joining the Live and Let Live Movement.

Use hashtags to join bigger conversations and tag team members in posts to give them shoutouts. It's a good way to boost visibility and make everyone feel included.

Live and Let Live has a list of aspiration we promote as objectives for being excellent humans. We also have a litany of challenges in creating a method to remove aggression from the law, which we're building an LMS to offer instruction and points to consider in making 'excellent human' choices in how we treat each other and the Law. Ambassadors are required to go through the LMS training to be qualified to share the scope of potential questions about applying both the moral (be an excellent human) and legal (don't aggress) practical political philosophy of the Movement.

Get your remote team talking on social media by asking for their thoughts and feedback. Whether it's through comments, polls, or questions, make sure everyone feels invited to join the conversation. It's all about creating a lively and inclusive online community.

My tips to achieve that: 1. Transparency: Share insights into your team's successes, challenges, and even failures transparently. Being open helps build trust. 2. Storytelling: Share personal stories or anecdotes that reflect the team's experiences, struggles, and triumphs. Personal narratives resonate more deeply. 3. Show Personality: Don't be afraid to infuse humor, warmth, by sharing jokes and behind-the-scenes moments. 4. Embrace Imperfections: Acknowledge mistakes or challenges openly. Showing vulnerability can humanize your team. 5. Authentic Visuals: Use authentic and original visuals, such as candid photos or videos that portray real moments within the team.

Keep it real on social media. Share real stories and show appreciation for your team. Being genuine helps build stronger, more personal connections with your remote team.

Think beyond traditional expectations of “social media” and consider where your team or clients are spending their time— Are they in South America of Europe? Maybe a few WhatsApp groups would help facilitate communications. Are they in China? WeChat might make more sense. Or if you work in gaming or IT development, maybe discord or telegram would be better. The medium supports the message, so I always say meet people where they are and think beyond slack or Instagram or Twitter.
