How can you use safety expertise to transition into construction management?

Safety culture at the construction site is an important indicator of a well thought out work process which is on of the prerequisites to maintaining good quality among others. The discipline of construction managers to empower safety on construction sites will lead to better enforcement of the other aspects of management namely quality control and stakeholder management.

Why we shall change amazing safety job to some other management job, if you belive that safety is about saving peoples life, protecting environment and facilities then honestly I dont think you need to change it, there are very good ways to improve your skills in safety. Construction manager is better to become safety manager. However if you Wana be construction manager which is also difficult job and if you intend to follow safety then may is good to be that person.

Some ways to get started are by making sure you have all of the current required safety trainings required for setting foot on a commercial job site. OSHA 10 & 30 should be your bare minimum and then go from there

Here are some steps one can take to make this transition: 1. Understand the key responsibilities and skills required for a construction management role. Familiarize yourself with construction project planning, scheduling, budgeting, and risk assessment. 2. You may need to pursue additional education or certifications in construction management. Consider courses or programs in project management, construction law, cost estimation, and construction technology. 3. Look for opportunities to gain hands-on experience in construction management. This could involve volunteering for construction projects, working part-time or interning at construction firms, or taking on small construction projects to apply your knowledge.

Safety is an inherent requirement of Construction Management. In my opinion, a Construction Manager is not fully qualified, unless he has high regards for safety. Safety professionals already get involved right from beginning of the project planning. They also must understand the philosophies of resource management, cashflow to apply the safety management principles successfully in their work-lift.

Starting with a Bachelors or accredited Masters Degree in a related field is a great way to start. Afterwards, start working in the field and gaining the expertise under other more seasoned professionals to obtain your PMP or CCM

As a project manager one thing I never want to tell the CEO is we are at a stop because of a safety violation. Having safety inspections from certified inspectors is always money well spent. These certifications can be very valuable when combined with business and construction knowledge.

In-depth knowledge of construction begins with being practically involved in the process. To manage a construction project goes beyond just having certification but must be rooted in the technicality involved in the activities. Certification in Construction and project management equips the personnel with all the relevant communication, safety and quality expertise to carry out the project successfully.

In my experience, joining groups of likeminded professionals can provide you with a wealth of knowledge and tips to help you progress your career. There are many different groups in various social media platforms that would welcome people from all safety related areas.

Understanding safety is understanding the concept of preventing accidents. It's a skill that focuses on additional preparation and risk mitigation to avoid accidents before they even happen. This is the world of a construction manager, a great construction manager is someone who is able to put systems in place to anticipate risk ahead of them happening.

Start collecting a list of projects you've helped work on and companies you worked with. Even small contributions count! You still did something on that project to contribute to the overall success of it, whether it was coordinating schedules, reviewing the initial contract, or just tracking change orders. It's all relevant experience on real jobs that add up!

Time in the industry, positions held, education, etc. Are a huge tools to negotiate salaries, and where a salary can't budge, be sure to negotiate PTO and benefits instead to compensate!

As a Construction Manager it is also important to create an environment where workers can feel secure, safe and be productive in their abilities without risking their personal health or well being. This environment is achieved by involving the workers in safety planning which will result in reduced work related accidents.
