Discussion forums have often been the alternative to crickets and blank stares with in-person learning. Learning engagement, supported by external platforms, helps spice up discussions. External tools offering a socially annotative learning experience for class discussions like Perusall Jamboard and Padlet mix things up. Their features and amenities add some visual aesthetics through colorful backgrounds, the ability to change colors for posts, and infuse multimedia comments by adding images, files, and videos. While participating in discussion, learners are often developing new technological skill sets by navigating new technologies, engaging in healthy competition for quality posts, and critically thinking through the course materials.

I feel that adding competition will command higher test scores. In my experience in the Nuclear Power training environment, adding a competitive environment made the students try harder. This fostered higher test scores and therefore a better understanding of their responsibilities. The result was a greater understanding of their responsibilities and a safer work environment. My job was to beat my fellow students, not just to pass. Of course it still was a friendly environment.

As a facilitator, you can invite learners to go beyond a standard discussion prompt by sharing how it relates to their personal experience. Then, when replying to posts, you can say "Sandra, that's an interesting perspective. Did you see what Tracy posted about how it relates to their professional experience? It's an interesting contrast, I'd love to hear your thoughts." Making connections of this type creates a community of learners and deepens the learning.
