Navigating the expertise maze, I found my niche compass through mentorship. Each mentor was a guiding star, helping me crystallize my path. It's not just about finding a niche; it's about crafting it with the wisdom of mentors, shaping my journey into a tapestry of unique mastery.

Absolutely right on identifying your niche! I see it as identifying your 'superpower' in this superhero universe of work. But remember, even Superman had his Justice League. Apart from looking within, connect with your network, widen your "Mentor League". Their perspective can often illuminate unseen corners of your expertise. The art of knowing is knowing what to ignore. The refining process becomes more of a team sport then, and turn you into a pro in your niche, or should I say, ‘super-niche’!

I have a niche but never identified it. I experimented and things became clearer and clearer what makes me special to my audience/clients. And I still communicate broadly to find interconnected niches...

My father (ex MIT) was Britain's leading business management expert for 10 years advice where do you want to be in 3/5/10/20 years? Think about what you have a passion for and if you see that as commercial skills to master. A mentor plays a pivotal role in this transformation, guiding you from a dreamer into a competent confident expert over time, but without a clear direction it is pointless! This is where working with an experienced executive leadership coach is crucial in my opinion. Investing in yourself is key!

Look for different applications of the same skillset and seek mentors outside your industry and network. Too often we focus on climbing a pyramid of experience and miss the opportunity to build a dynamic lattice of understanding. Identifying how the problems others face correlate to challenges in your niche will strengthen your knowledge and network, and bring new solutions to the mix.

100% in agreement with finding the right mentors, it's like catching the right train for your journey. And remember, it's not always the most crowded one. As a seasoned HR pro, I'd say consider mentor diversity. Different mentors can offer different perspectives shaped by a variety of experiences. One of the major benefits I gained from my mentor is the expansive networking opportunities. Being introduced to a broad professional community within my niche has been a pivotal experience. There is seldom a one sided relationship, especially with a mentor, many have made their money and don't do mentoring for this. Some just enjoy spending time with smart people who respect them and this is crucial. Make introductions to people whom they have expressed an interest, ask them how you can help them etc. And ask them questions...don't forget to leave your EGO at the door...!

Although technically she is my sponsor, I prefer to think of her as a mentor (she knows who she is). One of the most valuable things she has taught me in my career is how to enhance my critical thinking skills. Being naturally curious and always eager to learn, her mentorship has complemented my natural traits and helped me both professionally and personally. I recently met a serial entrepreneur and he shared about how he sponsored a young graduate to kickstart their IT company some 2 decades ago. The graduate went on to develop their niche in a highly competitive industry all because of that early phase mentorship. Their mentor not only believes in them but also championed and supported their startup, giving it the fuel they needed to launch successfully.

We need to diversify the mentorship portfolio. Rather than relying solely on one mentor, consider seeking guidance from multiple individuals (who possess different perspectives) within your niche. Diversifying your mentorship portfolio can offer a broader understanding of the field, various approaches, and different insights. Each mentor may specialize in different dimensions/aspects of your niche. This will provide a well-rounded learning experience.

In my experience, a little out-of-the-box thinking goes the extra mile. Apart from the traditional routes, consider fitting in 'reverse mentoring' in your matrix. Millennials and Gen-Z have a lot to teach us; they speak the language of the future and bridge the digital gap, essential to carve your niche in today's volatile world. We are all apprentices in a craft where no one ever becomes a master. Remember, growth has no bounds and mentors can come in unexpected forms!

Once your mentor thinks you are ready and they trust you they may offer to go into business with you or to introduce you to some of their trusted connections. Do not force this as it will kill the relationship. YOU MUST BUILD TRUST FIRST! Sorry to shout but this is crucial!

The most enriching mentorship relationships ironically go beyond the niche factor. It's also about forging connections on a human level. One mentoring relationship that left an indelible mark on me was with a person not from my field. The shared values and mutual respect enabled me to view things from new vantage points in my HR world. So I say, let’s not confine ourselves to our niches only. As they famously claim, divergent roads often lead to beautiful destinations

- follow many people in your niche - comment a lot with surprising comments that are non cliche to attract the attention of people outside your niche that might complement your niche - combine different social media with different kinds of messages to find interlinks with other niches.

Be flexible and adaptable. We need to understand that not all (potential) mentors may be available or willing to commit significant time to mentorship. Some might prefer occasional guidance, while others might be open to more regular interactions. Be flexible in your approach and adaptable to their schedules and preferences. Flexibility can increase your chances of finding a suitable mentor who aligns with your needs and availability.
