How can you use the Lewis model to improve your communication skills?

Lewis model is helpful for anybody who want to travel around the world to understand the approach of the culture, where we travel as well as in international business.

The Lewis model stands out to me as a helpful framework compared to others because of its simplicity and practicality. Instead of drowning in complex theories, it neatly categorises cultures into three types: linear-active, multi-active, and reactive. It's like having a cheat sheet for understanding how different cultures communicate. At the same time, it doesn't box cultures into rigid classifications but recognises the diversity within each type. This makes it easier to approach cultural differences with an open mind and adapt accordingly.

Lewis model is a great tool summarizing the general differences of communication styles. Just to apply it powerfully, people need to have their own life experiences. Such as a German can know that Chinese communication style is usually relationship-oriented and respectful through reading. But he would never know what does it really mean if he/she has never experienced that in real life. The best and only way to improve communication skill is to go out and communicate.

Although an excellent guide, I believe the Lewis model serves as a more effective guide when interacting and communicating with individuals from different cultures in-person.

By understanding which category your and your counterpart’s culture falls into, you can adapt your communication style accordingly. For instance, if you are from a multi-active culture but are dealing with someone from a linear-active culture, you might need to be more punctual, direct, and organized.

As a Pauktuutit Inuit Women of Canada Policy Analyst, the Lewis model is integral to my daily work. My workplace is founded on, and guided by, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit Principles (IQ). Respect and cross-cultural communication is key to our consensus based decision making. According to the Lewis model, I am a linear communicator working in a reactive workplace. Due to this, I've learned that it's crucial to pay attention to context, to listen intently, and especially to always be respectful of people's lived experience, knowledge, expertise, and roles. This builds and strengthens good relationships. As I result, I tailor my approach to my audience and their communication style to ensure maximum success.

In my experience studying the model, the Lewis Model in cross-cultural and cross-language environments requires understanding and adapting: Recognize: First, identify the cultural type of your counterpart (Linear-Active, Multi-Active, or Reactive). Adapt: Adjust your approach: Linear-Active: Be direct and prioritize tasks over personal discussions. Multi-Active: Be prepared for personal anecdotes, engage emotionally, and allow tangents. Reactive: Emphasize harmony, be patient, note non-verbal cues. Feedback Loop: After the interaction, reflect on what went well or what can be improved. We can bridge communication gaps by shifting our style based on the Lewis Model.

The Lewis Model, while instrumental in linguistics and social fields, has its caveats: Oversimplification: Grouping nations into three categories can stereotype and miss intra-country nuances. Cultural Fluidity: Cultures change; a static model might not reflect current realities. Ignoring Intersectionality: It overlooks factors like gender, age, and socio-economic status that shape communication. Nationality Focus: Concentrating on nationality can neglect other identities, such as regional or professional affiliations. Bias Risk: Uncritical use of the model may perpetuate unconscious biases. Hence, using it wisely is advisable and necessary to avoid creating even more barriers and issues.

Agree. Lewis model developed 70 year ago so obviously it has limitations. It is important to recognize these limitations when applying this model to the real world situations. While Lewis model provides valuable insights, it should be used in conjunction with other theories and framework to develop comprehensive understanding.

"When Cultures Collide," which provides an in-depth look at the model and its application in various cultural contexts, is a good starting point. Look for courses, either online or at educational institutions, that focus on cross-cultural communication or international business. These courses often cover the Lewis Model as part of their curriculum.

There are many ways to segment personality types and communication styles. They are useful to get us to think about our own style, so that we can be more aware when you are communicating with ... anyone, from any cultural background. We have a tendency to expect everyone to get us, our style and match with us. This is an arrogance that most of us suffer. Once aware of one's own style/preference then listen to the other person with a deep desire to not only understand but connect. You won't have to remember the 'communication types', rather, by being fully present and attentive you can notice the differences, then align with them to the extend that you can. The ability to connect begins with LISTENING.

In my personal experience of having lived and been raised in ALL three types of cultures mentioned in the Lewis model, I can honestly say that although there are preferences for a certain type of communication in each culture, human nature does not necessarily change just based on the culture. I’ve had reactive cultures who loved storytelling s it was something novel to them ; nobody had spoken to them in that way before. When I was working with professionals in multi active cultures, it was often helpful for them to not stay off track when clearly outlining what tasks at hand were. When dealing with linear cultures, it was often seen as charming when opening communication with a genuine interest in the other person.

The Lewis model was published in 1954, it's almost 70 years since he published his concept. Over a period of 70 years there has been a lot of cross cultural evolution, mixing and not to mention the impact of the internet and social media in our communication. From my personal experience of traveling around the world on a motorcycle covering approximately 1,30,000 km across 33 countries, what I discovered is people around the world have common struggles, insecurities and concerns. There might be cultural differences on a particular topic but the core personalities are very similar across the globe. What matters is to understand the background,education,experiences and the culture of the person to establish effective communication.

While the Lewis model is helpful, checking out other models can increase your understanding in different areas. Think about Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions, for example. It breaks down cultural differences into six dimensions like individualism versus collectivism. Then there's Trompenaars' Cultural Dimensions, which looks at dilemmas such as universalism versus particularism. In the end, go with what works best for you and the situation. Whether it's the Lewis model, Hofstede's dimensions, or Trompenaars' dilemmas, to name a few, each gives you different insights. It's like having different lenses to see the world!
