How can you use image editing to create a sense of scale and proportion in your photos?

Technique does matter but often, in practical situations when time and space are limited, one has to think on their feet. Three things that I find help in such situations are: 1. A clear brief outlining the objective of the shoot 2. References 3. Photographer's imagination While a mastery of visual technique, equipment, lighting and control are very desirable qualities in a cameraperson, with some creativity and plenty of imagination, they may be able to deliver results, rendering the editor's job much easier. Playing with colours, textures and shades can enhance the results. Do not be afraid to experiment with top angles to establish, spaces, location or sizes of structures. Don't shy away from extreme close-ups to bring out the details.

The audience / viewer should know by looking at the focal point what a brand or company does and what the message is. If using a professional third party to help you and the brand, it's best to discuss before hand what the main message that the company or brand is trying to achieve. The photographer or videographer is not a mind reader, make sure that you are both on the same page to make sure that the desired results are achieved.

To establish a sense of scale in an interior space, a good rule to follow is: include 3 walls (even if the third wall is just a sliver at the edge of the frame). Keep the center lines of the image parallel/level with the space. Include portions of floor & ceiling without tipping up or down.

From a design point of view, when you utilize a recognizable item to convey the size of the subject, you can higlight the scale in the scene. A personal favourite of mine is to use lines present in and around the subject helps me click interesting photographs.

On Human subjects it is dependent on a lot of things like Lighting, Angle, Background, focus, etc. 2. Do tap on a spot where you would like to have the focus, this tap to focus option is available on many smartphones these days. This will also give you a choice to adjust the lighting of the scene. 3. Check with the HDR option, this gives you a good feel by adding the right colours to the picture. Always have this option on, while capturing pictures with beautiful colours. 4. Even if you have a good sensor of the camera to capture pictures, image processing is always important to get it right.

Some of those visual techniques might be 1- Overlay objects 2- Foreground, bacground order 3- Color, lighting, Shadows blend 4- Blur and Focus 5- Text and graphic scale, size and distance.

Take tonnes of photos! Loads of them! Take multiples of the same image so you can play, add, delete, adjust and compare. This will allow you to practice your editing skills/ techniques while developing (aka, discovering) your own style.
