One fun way to engage the audience through humor is by starting the presentation by explaining there is a word of the day and asking the audience to click on a particular emoji every time they hear the word. It’s a great way to keep them listening the whole time and have some fun along the way. When I tried this tactic I talked about it being a favorite moment in one of my childhood television shows - PeeWee’s Playhouse and how we were instructed to scream every time we heard the word. Screaming isn’t very professional, but clicking on emojis works just fine!

Humour is not everyones cup of tea., Humour is a serious topic. Study of culture is critical here. While some cultures use slangs and even abusive language to add punch to humour, others totally discourage it. What works in Japan will not work in US and vice versa as an example. Even use of emojis also matter. For example, thumbs up emoji is a sign of approval in Western culture, traditionally in Greece and the Middle East it has been interpreted as vulgar and even offensive. Appropriate and sensitive use of humor can enhance the quality of your presentation. But mind you, you have to be extremely careful of the joke you’re trying to make. If not done well, it will backfire and make you think, ‘Why did I do this in the first place?'.

I often use sarcasm, irony, and puns either intentionally or unintentionally during my sessions related to disability rights. In my experience, they have helped me to emphasize what I am saying. Sharing an example. While I was talking about the problematic term 'Divyangjan', I said that if I were one with divine organs and powers, I could have acquired wings to fly over the wheelchair-inaccessible infrastructure. This statement could generate laughter. It also prompted the listeners to think about the issue of wheelchair inaccessibility.

I think the safest humour is self irony. If you are laughing about yourself, it is ok for others to laugh as well. Also, nobody gets offended.

For my experiences, I think good humour triggers conversation and for virtual meetings and lives an imprint in peoples mind. Usually for virtual meetings, you want people to be engaged and participate. Right from the start of the virtual, to middle through to the end, the presenter must must strategically add humour as well ensure his message is well presented.

Humor as said earlier could be either very entertaining or could be extremely upsetting. Choose the one wisely based on your audience and what do you really want to establish. How do you want your audience to perceive you.

Comedic timing is everything! If you are going to make a joke, make sure you have time to let it land. Cracking a joke and moving back to serious matters instantly makes everyone feel strange.

Breaking the fourth wall...The 4th wall is the screen we’re watching. We treat this wall like a one-way mirror. Take advantage of the real estate you have on the screen and play with it. e.g stick your finger right in the middle of the lens of your camera when you want to make a point. Tilt your camera at a weird angle to emphasize an awkward situation. Talk to an imaginary person off screen when storytelling. Tell Joe that you can smell his toast burning and go get it. Exploit the chat. Tell them you are sorry you type with an accent. Only answer with emojis. You are not trying to recreate a live performance on stage . It's virtual and most are watching a bobbing head on their screen.

Another way to test and practice your humor is by writing jokes or humorous anecdotes and sharing them with others. I always watch stand-up comedy or comedy shows to study different comedic techniques and delivery styles which gives me practical experience in a supportive environment.

Having meticulously observed the learning pattern among various age groups for over a decade, I have found that the learning curve goes downhill after 15-20 minutes of a lecture's commencement. Irrespective of the topic, it gets challenging to hold the learner's attention in a virtual setting. Here's what I do to keep the ambience lively. 1. Introduce a serious topic with a humorous remark! E.g. When I teach "Salary Negotiation", I say, "Any one who loves shopping, is already an ace negotiator! Share your fun story before we begin the session."?? 2.
