To facilitate literally means to make things easier for people. People who speak Spanish know it comes from the same root as “fácil”— easy. Facilitation as a leader is about being able to zoom out and see where the roadblocks are so they can be removed. I find that most problems leaders identify as people problems are actually process problems, so in a Supply Chain management environment, good facilitation comes down to strong curiosity, process orientation, and assuming positive intent. Ask yourself— do my people have a simple way to alert me about issues?

Be a very good listener. Be aware of what's important to each staff member. Be committed to everyone's focus and responsibility. Propose alternative ideas, possibilities and hear feedback. Ask for other's input from peers and mentors. Be willing to speak up for shy peers and/or ask for their perspective and advise. Having a network of other facilitators helps broaden what's new, possible and learning.

Additionally, facilitation can help in collaborative supply chain planning with the input and buy-in of all stakeholders.
