To use DMAIC, you need to follow the five phases in order and complete the tasks and tools associated with each phase. To begin, the Define phase requires you to clearly state the problem you want to solve, the scope of your project, the goals you want to achieve, and the stakeholders you need to involve. Tools such as project charter, voice of the customer, SIPOC diagram, and stakeholder analysis can help. In the Measure phase, data needs to be collected and verified that relates to your problem and current performance. Data collection plan, operational definitions, measurement system analysis, and baseline metrics are some of the tools that can help. The Analyze phase uses statistical and graphical methods to test hypotheses, validate assumptions, and find patterns and trends in your data. Pareto chart, fishbone diagram, scatter plot, hypothesis testing, and regression analysis are some of the tools that can help. Moving on to Improve phase, brainstorming, affinity diagram, prioritization matrix, pilot plan, and solution validation are tools that can help generate and evaluate potential solutions based on data analysis. Lastly in Control phase, control plan, control chart, standard operating procedures, and lessons learned are some of the tools that can help implement a solution on a full scale while monitoring its performance over time.
